A totally unpredictable and spectacular race today at Montreal. No one could foretell the major changes that a simple accident on the circuit followed by the entrance of the Safety Car would bring into the overall race statistics. After Adrian Sutil had the misfortune to abandon due to the lose of control of his car, the drivers were forced to run under yellow flag conditions, and shortly after then, the Safety Car was deployed in order to help get Sutil's car out of track with a mobile crane and clean the race sector of debris. All drivers tried to get the most out of the situation, and step by step, they went for a visit at the paddock for refueling and tyre changing. When the business was done, Raikkonen and Kubica came neck to neck on the paddock lane, but from nowhere, the red light lit up and the drivers were forced to stop. The one who couldn't brake in safe time was Hamilton, running close behind them. He practically climbed onto Kimi's car, thus damaging his and the other car and forcing himself and the Finnish to unexpectedly quit the race. Replay shows that Nico Rosberg has also been involved in the incident and lost the front nose, but unlike the two, he could make it into the race again, pitting for a new nose a lap later.
It's hard to tell who is responsible for the crash, but many would and do point to Hamilton. I wouldn't and don't... I believe that circumstances point to the stupid regulations in the F1 and to the even more stupid manouevre of the one who turned the lights from green to red in such a queued situation, when the distance between the 4 cars involved was far from being safe.
After the tragic event for both McLaren and Ferrari, the race continued under the same high dose of adrenalin up until the end. After struggling to overtake Vettel, Kovalainen achieved only a mere 9th position and no points. The great winner of Montreal GP was Robert Kubica, a devoted, talented and modest F1 driver that showed race after race a constant improvement in skills. He was followed by Nick Heidfeld on 2nd and David Coulthard on 3rd. To sum up, after the 7th GP of the 2008 F1 calendar, McLaren is the great loser, with 0 points achieved in Canada. Ferrari is still the leader with 73 points, BMW Sauber now scores 70 points in the Constructors' championship and has taken the lead in the Drivers' standings helped by Robert Kubica with 42 points. Hamilton remains stranded on the 2nd position with 38 points, same with Massa, who comes on 3rd. Raikkonen is still far away on 4th, with 35 points.
Congratulations to BMW Sauber and its drivers for their success!
The situation in F1 is rather steamy right now, and with a McLaren that wants to take its revenge and a rising BMW, plus a constant Ferrari, everything could happen in the next race, to be held at Magny Cours, in France, in two weeks time. But, I have to admit:fingers crossed for McLaren, and hope for a better race!
