Four world premieres and an anniversary celebration: Mercedes-Benz at the Paris Motor Show 2010

Ultimate efficiency paired with powerful, confident designs are the combined hallmarks of the innovations being presented by Mercedes-Benz at the Paris Motor Show 2010. "We are now witnessing the motor car being invented for the second time", explains CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche. "Currently we are making advances in efficiency which are unprecedented in automotive history. As the inventor of the motor car, we feel we have a very special responsibility for its future." Just one example is the widespread introduction of the ECO start/stop function in the CLS, CL and S-Class as well as in the Viano.

With its exciting, perceptible design and refined sportiness, the new edition of the CLS benefits from the fact that as the inventor of the segment Mercedes-Benz is a whole generation ahead. All of the engines in the CLS are new and help to guarantee an improvement in fuel consumption of up to 25 percent compared with the previous models. Also making a contribution to the increase in efficiency is the electromechanical Direct-Steer system fitted as standard and celebrating its world premiere in the CLS. The CLS is also the first car in the world to feature optional LED High Performance headlamps. For the first time, these combine the tried-and-tested Intelligent Light System from Mercedes models using bi-xenon headlamps with LED technology.

Following the B-Class F-CELL fuel-cell car, Mercedes-Benz is now introducing the new A-Class E-CELL as its second electric car built in series-production conditions. The car’s two high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries provide a range of over 200 km (NEDC). The car is powered by a quiet, locally emission-free electric drive with peak output of 70 kW (95 hp), developing a high torque of 290 Nm.

With the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is presenting the world's most fuel-efficient luxury saloon at the Paris Motor Show 2010. As the first four-cylinder engine in the more than 60-year history of success of the S-Class, the highly-efficient turbo diesel unit achieves fuel consumption levels of just 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), corresponding to a CO2 output of 149 g/km. As a result, the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is the first 5-litre car in the luxury segment and at the same time the first vehicle in its class to undercut the 150-gram mark in terms of CO2 output. As for performance, it boasts an acceleration rate of 0 - 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, and a top speed of 240 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz is also focusing on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in the exclusive top-end segment with the new generation of the CL-Class. In addition to the newly developed BlueDIRECT technology with third-generation spray-guided direct injection, the tailor-made BlueEFFICIENCY package of the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY makes a significant contribution towards reducing consumption by 22 percent.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano leads its class, defining the new benchmark for large-capacity vehicles. New engines and new transmissions reduce emissions and fuel consumption while enhancing performance. The new chassis offers the ultimate in ride comfort and driving safety. The cockpit and passenger compartment are more user-friendly and attractively appointed than ever. The Viano is instantly recognisable by its "face", featuring the Mercedes star in the style of the current passenger cars, and a newly designed rear section.

The motor car will be 125 years old next year, and the company responsible for this invention is still very much at the forefront of mobility today. Mercedes-Benz is highlighting its leading role by presenting a whole series of innovations at the Paris Motor Show – and as such is acknowledging the words of its founding father Carl Benz: "The passion for invention will never die."

As part of this, Mercedes-Benz Accessories will be presenting an innovative docking station which will be showcased in an S-Class – after all, mobile entertainment is what the Apple iPad is all about. The prototype demonstrates how the tablet computer could be integrated into the rear of many Mercedes-Benz models: safe, easy to operate and always ready to use.
