Citan – New Mercedes-Benz urban delivery van undergoes winter testing

Every Mercedes-Benz has to earn the right to sport the three-pointed star by completing what is probably the most gruelling and most rigorous winter testing in the automotive industry. The new Mercedes-Benz Citan urban delivery van has successfully completed these tests. Numerous other tests are also testimony to the high quality of the body, interior, drive system and suspension.


Extreme tests at sub-zero temperatures

Sub-zero temperatures down to -40°C, metre-high snow lining both sides of the road, snow often on the road too, coupled with just a few hours of daylight – the winters in northern Sweden are bleak and harsh. The perfect conditions to put the new Mercedes-Benz Citan to the test.

Mercedes-Benz Vans has been testing every new model under extreme conditions near to the Arctic Circle for decades. Sprinter and Vito vans have undergone rigorous winter testing on numerous occasions. Now the new Citan has followed in their footsteps.

Own test centre near the Arctic Circle

In the small town of Arjeplog, Mercedes-Benz has set up its own test centre with workshops, offices and test tracks. It is hermetically sealed to keep out prying eyes. Here and on other test tracks on a nearby lake, on a challenging mountain route, as well as driving on public roads, the new Citan urban delivery van has had to prove its mettle.

Tests focusing on cold start behaviour, the heating and ventilation, the seat heating and windscreen defrosting are par for the course in the Scandinavian winter. But testing in the Artic Circle also looks at how materials respond to extreme temperatures: how do the door seals perform, for instance? At sub-zero temperatures even plastics will go brittle and can break or tear. In certain circumstances, creaking noises may occur where materials overlap.

Such shortcomings are unacceptable for a Mercedes-Benz. If the high-quality hallmark interior of the Mercedes-Benz Citan can withstand this environment, it will take even the harshest Central European winter in its stride. The Citan has passed all the tests. As a genuine Mercedes-Benz it can now stand up masterfully to even the harshest icy-cold temperatures.

Fine-tuned suspension control systems

The Scandinavian test centre with its ice-covered terrain is also the ideal place to test and fine-tune the suspension control systems. ESP® comes as standard on board the Citan, just as it does on any Mercedes-Benz. Yet ESP® is just the overarching term for a wide array of control systems, including subfunctions such as anti-lock braking system, acceleration skid control, drive and braking torque control, engine friction torque control, understeer control, rolling-moment intervention.

Each of these systems needs to interact perfectly in a Mercedes-Benz van under the most difficult conditions and different vehicle loads, and hence the need for exhaustive testing. Measuring devices and a laptop are a constant feature on board the camouflaged test vehicles. But the finesse of the experienced developers is at least just as valuable.

Punishing itinerary at the company's own test facility

The company's own test facility in Arjeplog provides the full range of punishing terrain for testing the new Citan, including roads with a 10, 15 and 20-percent incline. Covered on one side with high-grip heated asphalt, and slick ice on the other. The engineers talk in terms of µ‑split, the different friction coefficients on the left and right. Even under these conditions, a Citan has to navigate the inclines and descents safely, just like any other Mercedes-Benz van.

Other courses with compacted snow or the long braking area with a high-grip surface on one side for high-speed braking tests push the new urban delivery van to the limit. Mercedes-Benz has precisely specified the maximum steering correction, as well as yaw-rate characteristics – rotation around the vertical axis –, including response over time and peak value. A Citan must respond safely and predictably at all times.

Icemakers prepare courses on frozen lakes

On the nearby frozen lake, local professionals – the icemakers – have prepared precisely defined courses for Mercedes-Benz, including a circuit with a diameter of 500 metres, covered with snow on the outside, roughed-up ice in the middle, slick polished ice towards the inside. Here and on the various handling circuits with their sweeping and tight bends the Citan has to demonstrate grip and handling stability. The brand's hallmark tuning of the suspension and control systems becomes apparent even at low speeds on ice.

Green light for series production

To find out for themselves about the results of this year's winter testing programme, senior management from Mercedes-Benz Vans made the journey to the far north of Sweden, among them Volker Mornhinweg. The Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans was there not only to discuss the test results and the ensuing fine-tuning measures with the development engineers.

Volker Mornhinweg also got involved in some testing himself. Two days spent in icy-cold Arjeplog behind the wheel of the Citan, putting materials and vehicle to the test. And he is impressed: "Our new suspension and our control systems are now perfectly tuned. It's something you notice on the various handling courses and when moving off or braking. I'm also extremely happy with the changes in the interior – both in terms of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, as well as the robust materials selection. The Citan is now a bona fide Mercedes-Benz after all the tests and work our development engineers have done. And so it's ready for series production."

SPY: The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van receives a refreshed face for 2013

Apart from the new Citan and future Viano arriving in 2014, the Sprinter is also due to undergo a facelift procedure destined to keep the vehicle attractive up to 2017, when a new generation is set to enter the stage. The front fascia is the part set to change the most after the restyling process, as it gets new headlights optionally available with LED daytime running lights and a beefier radiator grille with the big Star placed in the middle. For the rest of the body, just subtle or no visual improvements are expected. The engine lineup will likely stay the same, but further tweaks in the efficiency department are bound to happen, that will help reduce the CO2 emission and improve fuel economy. At the moment, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is getting the taste of Scandinavian snow and ice, as the winter development is fully underway. Check out further spy shots after the jump!

SPY: A fleet of 2013 GL-Class prototypes returns to base after offroad testing

In April, Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new GL-Class (X 166) to public and media at the New York Auto Show. The last phase of development undergoes undeterred as a fleet of test prototypes has been recently spotted on the outskirts of Stuttgart. The black camouflage has come off, so more details of the massive SUV are now becoming visible, like the headlights, beefy grille and bumpers and the elegantly designed LED tail lamps. Most probably, given the mud that's accumulated on the wheels and sides of the body, the snagged GLs were returning to the R&D Centre from a series of offroad trials custom-made to evaluate the potential skills of this new SUV generation.

SPY: Winter work-out for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake (X 218)

During April this year, Mercedes-Benz is set to launch the all new CLS Shooting Brake, a niche allrounder which announces to combine the elegant design of a coupe with the solid design of a wagon car into one very attractive, stylish and well balanced model. The decision to greenlight the new addition to Merc's portfolio was made after the Concept Shooting Break was officially showcased in 2010 as a preview for the second generation CLS. Baring the X 218 internal codename, the 'shooting brake' will moderately resemble the concept car, meaning no freakish or extreme styling details. The powertrain and all the other bits and pieces come from the 4-door coupe. There's no word on a possible CLS 63 AMG SB variant with up to 557 hp, but the standard "500" version with a total output of 408 hp should be just fine until a final decision is taken. After the jump, besides the usual spy shots, you will also find a spy video featuring the new CLS Shooting Brake while being tried and tested on what seems to be an off-road course. Which tells us one important aspect: the new model could also be equipped with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive platform, just like its 4-door coupe sibling.

SPY: Mercedes-AMG continues testing for the new all-wheel-drive sports traction

Mercedes-Benz wants to offer a complete and challenging range of compact-sized models, so alongside the standard A-Class/B-Class and their niche derivates (future CLC and GLC), the Stuttgart-based constructor is set to launch a lineup of hot AMG versions for the compact class.


The forthcoming, Affalterbach-prepped vehicles will showcase a dynamic powertrain based on supercharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 320-350 hp and a newly developed all-wheel-drive traction system intended for top sports performance. While there were numerous reports in the past regarding the addition of a B 25 AMG potent MPV, it now appears the prototypes that appeared so far are solely modified B-Class cars fitted with the new 4x4 platform and thus used for testing the new underpinning configuration. Anyway, if the B 25 AMG is not coming at all whatsoever, interested clients will be able to choose between the spicy A 25 AMG and CLC 25 AMG, which are scheduled for release either late this year or early in 2013.

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros: Development and testing - Never before has a new truck undergone such intensive testing


Like every daring project, it all began with a blank sheet of papers. After a long period of in-house development, the new Actros eventually had to taste tarmac for the first time. Prototypes "dressed" in deep black "clothes" started rolling out of the Mercedes-Benz truck R&D centres onto the streets of the world. Around 20 million miles were covered during the testing phase, going from the hot South Africa up to the freezing-cold Arctic Circle, to demonstrate the new Actros is ready to successfully handle extreme weather conditions. The truck also showed an outstanding reliability, suffering no overhaul in 1.2 million kilometres of intensive run. Last, but not least, the engine has undergone over 60 million kilometres of thorough testing.


No other truck has been as thoroughly developed and tested before its production launch as the new Mercedes-Benz Actros. The foundations for development were laid as many as ten years ago, while the components and the complete vehicle have undergone five years of testing. During this time, the new Actros has clocked up around 20 million miles on the road, including in intensive customer driving tests. Then there were the extremely rigorous tests on test rigs, torture-track testing and other extreme examinations.

It all began on a blank sheet of paper

The story of the new Actros really did begin on a blank sheet of paper. To come up with a successor to the successful outgoing model, designers, developers, marketing specialists, product managers and everyone else involved started from scratch. Rather than make the new Actros a further development of its popular, tried-and-trusted predecessor, the aim was to start afresh so as to come up with a perfect and future-proof solution for operators and drivers. No stone was therefore left unturned during development.

The cab comfort features were redefined and redesigned, and the cabs themselves were dimensioned accordingly.

This approach gave rise to an all-new range structure: instead of two model series with their own characteristics for long-distance transport, short-distance transport and construction work, there are now three model series, each one specialising in one of the above disciplines. The first member of the new, three-strong family of Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty trucks is the new Actros, which exclusively covers the long-distance-transport segment in all its guises. The other members of this family will follow.

New range structure with the focus on long-distance transport

Focussing on the new Actros as a premium truck for long-distance transport opened up many new possibilities. For the first time, both the inside and outside of the cab were designed specifically for a single field of application. Development was based on several 1:4 scale models, which allowed the designers great freedom in determining the direction the new Actros would take.

From these, six 1:1 scale models were derived – three for the exterior and three for the interior. Even the very first interior sketch defined the clear visual distinction between the working and living areas – a first in truck development.

Some 1600 Daimler Trucks staff worked on the new Actros, including vehicle developers, testers and the major-component developers concerned. Their work was frequently monitored by the testing department as well as in special Truck Clinics. In four of these Clinics, a total of 638 operators and drivers were interviewed at great length.

Long before production started, the new Actros experienced the Arctic Circle in winter and the searing heat of Spain's Sierra Nevada in summer. It negotiated all kinds of roads in Turkey and got a taste of desert sand in South Africa.

Engine has undergone over 60 million kilometres of intensive testing

The launch of the new Actros also marks the introduction of a new generation of six-cylinder in-line engines. The outstanding quality of the new engine generation was evident even during its development. Extreme reliability and durability were among the most important development objectives. In order to achieve this, the engines were tested under the toughest of conditions, all over the world. To date, the engines have clocked up in excess of 60 million kilometres in endurance testing on test rigs and in real-life operation, for all emissions classes. No engine ever before has been as intensively tested.

Tested under the toughest of conditions, from the Arctic Circle to South Africa

The real-life road tests also covered all climatic conditions as well as extreme road conditions and gradients, ranging from an Arctic winter to an extremely hot desert climate. Real-life testing also included customer driving tests in the previous Mercedes-Benz Actros.

Outstanding reliability: 1.2 million kilometres without overhaul

On top of all this came customer driving tests of a very special nature, from
Mercedes-Benz's point of view: in North America and Japan, more than 70,000 engines are now working successfully in Freightliner and Fuso heavy-duty trucks. New-generation engines – albeit in a special configuration for the respective region – have already been in daily customer use there since 2007 (North America) and 2010 (Japan).

The findings from the tests conducted under extreme conditions have proved very positive. For instance, the new engine series achieves a "B-10" figure of 1.2 million kilometres, i.e. 20 percent higher than previously, in European long-distance transport. This means that the engines can cover at least this distance without the need for a major overhaul.

The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro in detail: Comprehensive testing ensures supreme quality

Teams from all departments – from Development to Production to Sales & Marketing to After Sales – worked in close collaboration with one another during the development of the new Citaro. Their joint objective was to achieve supreme quality, in order to best prepare the new Citaro for the rigours of urban and rural regular-service operation



State-of-the-art design and development methods

The top quality achieved in the series production of the new Citaro is rooted in state-of-the-art development methods, such as HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering). Examples for this type of quality assurance include component strength analyses, evaluation of vehicle vibrations and crash test simulations – all this and more is carried out by computer.
All safety-relevant components were analysed using the FMEA method in the early phases of development. The failure mode and effects analysis seeks to anticipate potential problems and prevent them. To put it in simple terms: the developers check everything that might go wrong in advance and undertake appropriate measures, thereby eliminating faults before they even occur. The development findings were backed up by numerous computer-aided calculations for components and assemblies as well as for the vehicle as a whole.

A laboratory bus examines production

The troubleshooting carried out during development of the new Citaro was not a purely theoretical affair, however: all the main body segments were scrutinised in rough form during the development phase when the prototype was built. It was therefore possible to examine potential cable chafing points, component accessibility or other critical issues directly on the vehicle, right from the outset.

The very first prototype of the new Citaro was already assembled on the production line so that any problems in the manufacturing process could be remedied immediately. Besides this, a special “laboratory bus” passed through each production station several times. Using this procedure, Mercedes-Benz was able to train the production workers and, at the same time, identify critical processes. Exact prototype protocols were kept to log all change requests for the bodyshop, assembly and testing, for instance. Workshops were held at regular intervals to resolve any flaws and document the progress in detail.

Testing under the toughest conditions on test rigs and the road

Individual components and assemblies, as well as complete buses were put to the test under the toughest conditions. The new doors, for example, were subject to endurance testing on test rigs, when they had to complete one million load cycles - the equivalent of a bus's entire service life – without any damage. Tests with seven carefully camouflaged prototypes were then conducted at the proving ground as well as on the road. Rigorous testing was also carried out in extreme climatic conditions, meaning that the new Citaro has already faced both the bitter cold of the Scandinavian winter and the searing summer heat in Spain and Turkey. The new urban bus furthermore had to prove its mettle in rough-road and endurance testing, which included a circuit of specially selected poor roads in remote regions of Turkey.

Successfully completed crash tests and pendulum impact tests in accordance with the ECE R29 standard for coaches, as well as rollover calculations based on the future ECE R66/01 standard, are testimony to the design’s high standard of safety.

The extensive programme of testing concludes this spring when new Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses will commence customer trials in everyday regular-service operation before series production gets underway.

The new Citaro: launching with rigid and articulated buses

Mercedes-Benz will be phasing in the high-volume model versions of the new Citaro over the course of 2011. The focus will be on urban and rural variants with a length of 12 metres and 2 or 3 doors, as well as the urban and rural versions of the articulated Citaro bus with 3 or 4 doors. The buses are driven by horizontal or vertical diesel engines from the OM 906 and OM 457 series in the familiar versions and power ratings. Further variants of the new Citaro will follow in 2012. The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro has been future-proofed, with all installation spaces already prepared for the future Euro VI emissions standard. The corresponding drive units will be launched at a later time. This progressive switch to the new model generation guarantees thorough testing of all versions, high quality, plus a continuous supply of vehicles without any disruption to customer deliveries. The complete range of new Mercedes-Benz Citaro models, including all rigid and articulated variants, the low-entry Citaro LE as well as the CapaCity, is due to become available over the course of 2012/2013.
