Citan – New Mercedes-Benz urban delivery van undergoes winter testing

Every Mercedes-Benz has to earn the right to sport the three-pointed star by completing what is probably the most gruelling and most rigorous winter testing in the automotive industry. The new Mercedes-Benz Citan urban delivery van has successfully completed these tests. Numerous other tests are also testimony to the high quality of the body, interior, drive system and suspension.


Extreme tests at sub-zero temperatures

Sub-zero temperatures down to -40°C, metre-high snow lining both sides of the road, snow often on the road too, coupled with just a few hours of daylight – the winters in northern Sweden are bleak and harsh. The perfect conditions to put the new Mercedes-Benz Citan to the test.

Mercedes-Benz Vans has been testing every new model under extreme conditions near to the Arctic Circle for decades. Sprinter and Vito vans have undergone rigorous winter testing on numerous occasions. Now the new Citan has followed in their footsteps.

Own test centre near the Arctic Circle

In the small town of Arjeplog, Mercedes-Benz has set up its own test centre with workshops, offices and test tracks. It is hermetically sealed to keep out prying eyes. Here and on other test tracks on a nearby lake, on a challenging mountain route, as well as driving on public roads, the new Citan urban delivery van has had to prove its mettle.

Tests focusing on cold start behaviour, the heating and ventilation, the seat heating and windscreen defrosting are par for the course in the Scandinavian winter. But testing in the Artic Circle also looks at how materials respond to extreme temperatures: how do the door seals perform, for instance? At sub-zero temperatures even plastics will go brittle and can break or tear. In certain circumstances, creaking noises may occur where materials overlap.

Such shortcomings are unacceptable for a Mercedes-Benz. If the high-quality hallmark interior of the Mercedes-Benz Citan can withstand this environment, it will take even the harshest Central European winter in its stride. The Citan has passed all the tests. As a genuine Mercedes-Benz it can now stand up masterfully to even the harshest icy-cold temperatures.

Fine-tuned suspension control systems

The Scandinavian test centre with its ice-covered terrain is also the ideal place to test and fine-tune the suspension control systems. ESP® comes as standard on board the Citan, just as it does on any Mercedes-Benz. Yet ESP® is just the overarching term for a wide array of control systems, including subfunctions such as anti-lock braking system, acceleration skid control, drive and braking torque control, engine friction torque control, understeer control, rolling-moment intervention.

Each of these systems needs to interact perfectly in a Mercedes-Benz van under the most difficult conditions and different vehicle loads, and hence the need for exhaustive testing. Measuring devices and a laptop are a constant feature on board the camouflaged test vehicles. But the finesse of the experienced developers is at least just as valuable.

Punishing itinerary at the company's own test facility

The company's own test facility in Arjeplog provides the full range of punishing terrain for testing the new Citan, including roads with a 10, 15 and 20-percent incline. Covered on one side with high-grip heated asphalt, and slick ice on the other. The engineers talk in terms of µ‑split, the different friction coefficients on the left and right. Even under these conditions, a Citan has to navigate the inclines and descents safely, just like any other Mercedes-Benz van.

Other courses with compacted snow or the long braking area with a high-grip surface on one side for high-speed braking tests push the new urban delivery van to the limit. Mercedes-Benz has precisely specified the maximum steering correction, as well as yaw-rate characteristics – rotation around the vertical axis –, including response over time and peak value. A Citan must respond safely and predictably at all times.

Icemakers prepare courses on frozen lakes

On the nearby frozen lake, local professionals – the icemakers – have prepared precisely defined courses for Mercedes-Benz, including a circuit with a diameter of 500 metres, covered with snow on the outside, roughed-up ice in the middle, slick polished ice towards the inside. Here and on the various handling circuits with their sweeping and tight bends the Citan has to demonstrate grip and handling stability. The brand's hallmark tuning of the suspension and control systems becomes apparent even at low speeds on ice.

Green light for series production

To find out for themselves about the results of this year's winter testing programme, senior management from Mercedes-Benz Vans made the journey to the far north of Sweden, among them Volker Mornhinweg. The Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans was there not only to discuss the test results and the ensuing fine-tuning measures with the development engineers.

Volker Mornhinweg also got involved in some testing himself. Two days spent in icy-cold Arjeplog behind the wheel of the Citan, putting materials and vehicle to the test. And he is impressed: "Our new suspension and our control systems are now perfectly tuned. It's something you notice on the various handling courses and when moving off or braking. I'm also extremely happy with the changes in the interior – both in terms of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, as well as the robust materials selection. The Citan is now a bona fide Mercedes-Benz after all the tests and work our development engineers have done. And so it's ready for series production."

The Mercedes-Benz Citan – the new urban delivery van from the star brand

Mercedes-Benz’ new urban delivery van is called Citan. The name was revealed today during a symposium on brand competence and city logistics, which was held at the Mercedes-Benz Design Center in Sindelfingen. The name Citan combines the words “city” and “titan,” thus making it clear that the vehicle is a first-rate specialist for city logistics — one that was specifically developed to meet the tough challenges faced in day-to-day operations.


New van series to boost sales

With the introduction of the new urban delivery vehicle, Mercedes-Benz is adding another production series to its family of vans. The Citan is supplementing the Vario (6.0 to 8.2 tons), Sprinter (3.0 to 5.0 tons), and Vito (2.77 to 3.2 tons) to broaden the range of products in the lower weight classes of the van market, where it will significantly boost sales.

Whereas the small vans segment was still a niche market in the mid-1990s, it has now grown to around 700,000 units in Europe. Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to gain a market share of four to five percent in this segment. Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, is convinced that the Citan will be a big success. “We will take advantage of the trend toward city vans, which our brand will be able to exploit thanks to its attractively priced vehicles and the high quality of our products and services,” says Mornhinweg. “Our typical Mercedes-Benz reliability, 24/7 service, and, last but not least, our great brand image are key selling points as far as our commercial customers are concerned.”

Due to its large number of variants, the new urban delivery van with the star is suited for a broad range of commercial applications. Not only will the Citan be offered as a panel van, a crewbus, and a mixed-use vehicle; it will also be available in a variety of lengths and weights.

The Citan will be launched on the market in fall 2012. The vehicle will be unveiled to the general public for the first time at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover in September.

The Citan — the ideal partner in city traffic

The Citan was developed and tested in line with Mercedes-Benz’ demanding quality standards. The vehicle is correspondingly durable and robust. At the same time, it meets the requirements of customers from the service, sales, and trade sectors, offering them a large cargo space despite the vehicle’s compact dimensions. In addition, the van boasts attributes typical of the brand, such as great quality, economy, safety, excellent handling, as well as high fuel efficiency and correspondingly low CO2 emissions. The drive concept encompasses a broad range of low-emission, fuel-efficient diesel and gasoline engines and includes a BlueEFFICIENCY package. An electric drive version is also being planned.

The Citan’s operation, interior, materials, and workmanship are of the same high quality as in other Mercedes-Benz vans. The new urban delivery van can therefore be justly called the “little brother” of the Sprinter and Vito, to which it is in no way inferior. As is the case with every Mercedes-Benz vehicle, safety plays a big role in the new van, all variants of which come with ESP as standard.

New markets for Mercedes-Benz vans

Mercedes-Benz has greatly expanded its vans business in recent years. In line with the slogan of “Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global,” the brand is not only manufacturing vans in Düsseldorf (Sprinters), Ludwigsfelde (Sprinters and Varios), and Vitoria, Spain (Vitos), but also in the U.S., Argentina, and China.

It is also planning to strengthen its presence in the Russian market through a partnership with GAZ, the leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Russia. Over the medium-term, the GAZ factory near Nizhny Novgorod will produce 25,000 Sprinters each year, and do so strictly according to Mercedes-Benz’ quality standards.

Mercedes-Benz already is the undisputed market leader for mid-size and large vans in Western Europe.

Zero-emission refrigerator van: Kerstner converts the electrically driven Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL

Bodybuilders are discovering the virtues of local emission-free driving: refrigerator van specialist Kerstner is presenting the first refrigerator van variant of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL at the Solutrans trade show in Lyon/France from 29 November to 3 December.


Refrigerator van that runs totally local emission-free

Their business is in the city: compact refrigerator vans based on the Mercedes-Benz Vito supply specialist stores and restaurants with fresh and temperature-sensitive foods. Urban settings are also the natural habitat of the local emission-free Vito
E-CELL. Kerstner, a leading brand for refrigerator vans, has now taken the logical step of building the first refrigerator van variant of the Vito E-CELL, generating zero local emissions.

With this vehicle, Mercedes-Benz is responding to customers' calls for a zero-emission refrigerator vehicle. The refrigerator body from Kerstner represents yet another customer-oriented solution from Mercedes-Benz.

Refrigerator unit powered by separate battery

The refrigeration set-up from Kerstner is based on the familiar and proven complete solution which is already being marketed successfully by Mercedes-Benz branches and partners under the Mercedes-Benz VanSolution programme. Here, the flat refrigerator unit on the roof of the Vito is supplied with power from a separate lithium-ion battery, however. This battery operates independently of the Vito E-CELL's traction battery, providing autonomous cooling for six to ten hours, after which it can be recharged at the mains in a maximum of four hours. The refrigeration unit does not impose any restrictions on the Vito E-CELL's range.

Kerstner puts the battery's service life at 3000 charging cycles. At one charging cycle per day over 240 working days a year, this amounts to a lifespan of around twelve years. The battery is supplied with power independently of the traction battery, via a separate charging system. The additional battery and the separate charger reduce the refrigerator van's maximum payload by only 75 kg.

Conversion based on tried and tested equipment

The body is based on Kerstner's tried and tested equipment. With an overall height of 2000 mm including refrigerator unit, the refrigerator van variant of the Vito E-CELL is also suitable for underground garages. The load compartment has a volume of 3.5 m³. Its floor is fitted with diamond-tread aluminium sheeting. Based in Gross-Rohrheim to the south of Frankfurt, Kerstner has been developing air-conditioning and cooling systems and insulating fit-outs for over 20 years. Insulation and cooling technology thus originate from the same manufacturer.

Vito E-CELL: first van to be factory-fitted with electric drive

The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL is the first van to be factory-fitted with an electric drive. It is based on the medium-length Vito panel van with a wheelbase of 3200 mm. Its electric motor generates a continuous output of 60 kW and maximum power of 70 kW. The peak torque stands at 280 Nm.

The traction batteries are accommodated under the floor, without interfering with the load compartment. The Vito E-CELL's high maximum payload of 850 kg ensures that it is fully suitable for commercial use. The capacity of the lithium-ion batteries stands at 36 kWh, resulting in a range of around 130 km, which is fully adequate for urban delivery operations.

The multiple award-winning Vito E-CELL is produced at the Vitoria plant in Spain's Basque region, on the same production lines as all other Vitos. As previously announced, Mercedes-Benz has begun production of a series of 2000 Vito E-CELLs this year. Almost 400 of these vehicles have been built to date.
