Daimler Buses has been awarded a major contract to deliver 260 Mercedes-Benz Citaro city buses to the emirate of Dubai. Production of the ordered buses is to commence in the first quarter of 2009. The Roads & Transport Authority, which is responsible for expanding the public transportation service in Dubai, is already using 80 Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses. In addition to the delivery of the buses, the contract includes a multi-year service and maintenance agreement.

“The major order from Dubai fills us with pride, and it shows that our vehicles can thrill and win over customers even in economically difficult times,” says Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses. “We will further expand our involvement in the Middle East growth market.” Being the operational part of the sales organization “Sales Overseas”, Daimler’s bus operations in the Middle East have been managed since 1999 by the “Regional Sales Office Daimler Buses Middle East” in Dubai.

The latest order consists of three-door Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses that meet the Euro V emissions requirements. The buses are twelve meters long and offer seating for 33 passengers each. Due to the high temperatures in Dubai, the vehicles are equipped with extra heat insulation in the floor as well as insulated wheel housings and special glass for the windows. Air showers at the entrances distribute cold air and help keep temperatures stable in the bus interior.

“We’re delighted that we received the order for the 260 buses,” says Holger Suffel, Managing Director of Sales at EvoBus. “Our teams from Development, Production, and Sales worked together flawlessly to make these special vehicles possible.

”Daimler Buses is the world’s leading manufacturer of buses and bus chassis of eight tons GVW and up. The company employs a total of 18,100 people around the world and sold more than 41,600 buses in 2008. The product spectrum covers city and overland buses, as well as travel coaches, and includes everything from minibuses to double-deckers, all of which are available with different engines and equipment features. European bus operations are managed by EvoBus GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG.
