Preview June 2008

June 13 – July 3, 1898 – 110 years ago: At the Paris Motor Show, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach present a new generation of trucks for five-ton payloads. The longitudinal four-stroke engine is mounted at the front end of the vehicle under a hood; power is transmitted via a gear-only manual gearbox, propeller shaft and spur gears to the rear wheels.

June 9 – 18, 1908 – 100 years ago: The first Prince Heinrich Rally, a touring car event organized by the brother of the German emperor, takes place from Berlin to Frankfurt via Hamburg and Cologne. Works driver Fritz Erle wins the race in a 50 hp Benz model.

June 26, 1998 – 10 years ago:
Daimler-Benz announces the phased take-over of Affalterbach-based AMG GmbH. On January 1, 1999 AMG transfers an initial 51 percent of the company’s shares to Daimler-Benz, with the remaining stock to follow in installments over the subsequent ten years.
