Avant/Garde Diaries from Mercedes-Benz stop over in Copenhagen

Painter Andreas Emenius curates Festival night dedicated to the theme of “Movement”

The digital interview magazine Avant/Garde Diaries invites to an evening focusing on the topic of “Movement” on 29 March 2012 at H.C. Andersen Slottet (Hans-Christian Andersen Castle), Tivoli, Copenhagen. Under the curatorship of painter Andreas Emenius, for one night, musician Mikkel Hess and numerous other artists of various disciplines will stage the theme “movement” in manifold ways with installations, concerts and performances, discussing and reflecting on it together with the public.

“For me the event in Copenhagen is an opportunity to collaborate with artists I admire, coming from diverse disciplines. It's an opportunity to create an experience based on my ideas and visual universe, but with spontaneous reactions from others, resulting in unknown synergies”, says Swedish-born Andreas Emenius, who now works in Copenhagen. “I hope that we will be able to create together a unique artistic experience, combining painting, music, dance and installations, in order to reflect in a physical and emotional sense on the theme “movement’, in an interdisciplinary manner.”

“Nothing moves people so much as the automobile – literally and figuratively speaking”, according to Anders Sundt Jensen, Director of Brand Communication, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “As the driving force of automotive development, Mercedes-Benz has always proven that curiosity and the joy of overcoming existing limits constitute the driving force for innovation and progress. And that is precisely the object of the Avant/Garde Diaries, too. We built a creative platform together with them in 2011; one where topics relevant to society and the current times, centred around art, fashion, music, innovations, trends, culture and the automobile can be experienced.”

The artists’ avant garde in dialogue with the public

In the Avant/Garde Diaries Festivals the international avant-garde, consisting of artists and trend-setters, meet under the curatorship of a visionary pioneer in order to delineate their view of the world of today and their vision of the world of tomorrow, and exchange views about these with experts and the public. The basis for this is a digital interview magazine that presents exceptional people as well as style-forming and pioneering ideas at www.theavantgardediaries.com. In addition the magazine reports extensively on the worldwide Festivals that began with great success in Berlin in July 2011, calling at different metropolis all around the world.

By choosing Copenhagen, a city was selected that combines tradition and modernity in an exemplary manner, thus perfectly suited to the topic of movement. The field of tension between time-honoured building styles and contemporary urban architecture has attracted countless designers and creative spirits. Centred in particular around the port, a vibrant, lively scene has established itself, as is impressively demonstrated by the great number of exhibition rooms and events.

The curator and the artist of the Festival in Copenhagen

Andreas Emenius is a Swedish artist based in Copenhagen. He graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London in 1999. In his work, Andreas Emenius tries to visualize the pulsating energies of people and objects to paint their gravity and movements, to reflect the intangible and the temporary. Through his paintings, drawings and objects, Emenius visualises a sceptical approach to our definition of existence. His work is filtered through memories, experiences and spontaneous reactions. He creates portraits of heroic and human-like characters made from memories that appear familiar in their various emotional states. His art has been presented in several different galleries in London, Stockholm, Berlin and Copenhagen. He has also created artworks for theatres, e. g. "Schauspielhaus" in Hamburg and “The Royal Danish Theatre” in Copenhagen.

Andreas Emenius is also one half of the impressive collaboration “Vibskov & Emenius” with visionary Danish designer Henrik Vibskov. In 2007 they presented “The Fringe Projects” – ten works exploring illusion, surface, and movement, all compiled in the book “The Fringe Projects 1–10” (144p Japsam Publishers, 2009). Their work has been exhibited at a number of galleries as well as institutions such as the “Gwangju Biennale” in Korea, “Wilhelm Wagenfeld Haus” in Bremen and “Zeeuws Museum” in Middelburg. Vibskov & Emenius continue their collaboration in “The Circular Series”.

With his creative input and outstanding profile as an international artist Andreas Emenius will offer the “THE AVANT/GARDE DIARIES Copenhagen – Movement” event a unique and multidisciplinary frame. Andreas Emenius was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973.

Mikkel Hess is a Danish composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist focusing mainly on percussion who lives and works in New York. As founder of the music label “Hessismore” he has already launched five studio albums. He has cooperated artistically e.g. with the Royal Theater Copenhagen, the National Danish TV and the Danish Film Academy. Hess is also a founding member of the Copenhagen art collective Boinkbox, which also functions – among other things – as a fashion and music label. In 2003 his debut album, “Hess is more – The Soundtrack” was launched by this label.

Among the other artists can be mentioned: Anders Trentemøller (musician, producer, DJ), Jenny Wilson (singer, that will make an installation together with Andreas Emenius), Lonely Boy Choir (musicians), Alessandro Pereira (dancer), Minna Berglund (dancer) and The Horse Ensemble.

From Copenhagen to Los Angeles

The next “Avant/Garde Diaries” festival will be held in California under the title “Transmission LA: AV Club curated by Mike D” from 20 April to 6 May 2012. The curator is Mike D, a founding member of the Beastie Boys. Together with numerous artists, musicians and DJs of the most diverse styles, he will create the event and present to the world public the new Concept Style Coupé from Mercedes-Benz.
