SPY - 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Klasse

Once again, a test prototype of the next generation SLK-Klasse has been spotted. This time, the photos are a bit clearer;still, too early to fairly judge the exterior design.

Due for launch in 2012, the next generation of the "little SL", codenamed R 172, has begun the long, road testing programme. The heavy camouflage prevents us from forming a valid opinion on the overall shape of the car, because it alters the size, making it look significantly larger than the current SLK. However, we spotted a resemblance to the SL-Klasse:the single-louvre radiator grille with the big Merc logo in the middle, which means "bye-bye" to the F1 nose. Mercedes-Benz will certainly apply the LED technology to the headlights. Also, the engine bonnet and the trunk section appear to have grown in size, whereas the front and rear consoles were shortened, as to counterbalance the sporty look. The R 172 will retain the folding hardtop, and if you ask us, it looks very similar in terms of design with the one of the first generation SLK, the R 170. Moreover, the exterior mirrors are new and similar to those seen on 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS prototypes, and are mounted directly on the door rather than the A pillar.

We can hardly say anything about the engines at this moment, but some say Mercedes-Benz is currently working on the development of a new, 3,5 litres, V6 petrol unit.
