Supreme sportiness, style and comfort define the new SL Roadster from Mercedes-Benz, which is available from Mercedes-Benz sales partners from 31 March 2012. Its body and body-in-white have been produced as all-aluminium constructions for the first time. At the market launch, there is a choice of two new powerful 6- and 8-cylinder engines featuring cutting-edge injection technology, with ECO start/stop function as standard. These engines are up to 29 percent more fuel-efficient than their predecessors. Two world-firsts are also being premiered in the new SL – the Frontbass system for the ultimate in listening pleasure even with the roof open and the MAGIC VISION CONTROL wiper/washer system, which applies the water to the windscreen directly from the wiper blade.
The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous abbreviation "SL" – super-light – quite literally.Systematic weight reduction is one of the outstanding structural design features of the new SL. Dr Joachim Schmidt, Member of the Management Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing, elaborates: "It was around 60 years ago that we celebrated the successful launch of our first super-light sports car. Since then, every generation of the SL has set new standards. And with the new model we are continuing this tradition."
The new SL sees Mercedes-Benz introducing an all-aluminium body-in-white into volume production for the first time. Together with a host of other intelligent improvements to points of detail, this leads to an overall weight reduction of up to 140 kilograms in comparison to the predecessor model. The aluminium structure is also superior to the predecessor's steel design in terms of rigidity, safety and comfort. "The new SL is the safest roadster in the world!" says Schmidt.
Environmental Certificate for the new Mercedes-Benz SL
The neutral inspectors from the TÜV Süd technical inspection authority have confirmed the high environmental compatibility of the new Mercedes-Benz SL in good time for the market launch, duly awarding the sporty and stylish Roadster the Environmental Certificate in accordance with ISO standard TR 14062. This certification is based on an exemplary life-cycle assessment for the SL, which entailed a comprehensive analysis of the Roadster's environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle – from production through extensive service to recycling at the end of its life. The results make good reading: the new SL-Class reveals advantages over the previous model in all impact categories. Primary energy requirements have been reduced by 23% and NOx emissions by 16% over the entire life cycle, for example. In addition, the new SL incorporates a higher percentage of high-quality recyclates and renewable raw materials. For the first time in automotive engineering, a secondary alloy has been qualified for aluminium inner panels in the body-in-white, in order to minimise the environmental impact in the manufacturing process. This goes far beyond the legal requirements. The Environmental Certificate and supplementary information are made available to the public in the "Life Cycle" documentation series, which is retrievable at http://www.mercedes-benz.com . In addition to the SL, the models of the A-, B-, C-, E-, M- and S-Class, the GLK, the SLK and the CLS have also received the Environmental Certificate from TÜV Süd.
Prices in Germany for the new Mercedes-Benz SL incl.19 % VAT:

- SL 500 117,096 euros

Mercedes-Benz consistently implements its 2020 growth strategy
By
Adji
Daimler AG sees Mercedes-Benz well on its way to achieving the goals of its 2020 growth strategy and reclaiming the number one position in the premium segment by the end of the decade.
Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, stated to investors and analysts at the opening of the new plant in Kecskemét, Hungary: “Mercedes-Benz is consistently implementing its growth strategy. We have a fighting spirit in the entire organization to become the leading manufacturer of premium automobiles once again also in terms of unit sales. We are aware of the challenges and we will master them.”
Following the successful year 2011, in which the division posted new records for unit sales, revenue and earnings, the year 2012 has also started well. Mercedes-Benz Cars is expected to report the best unit sales it has ever achieved in a first quarter.
With its Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy, the Mercedes-Benz Cars division intends to occupy the number one position in the premium segment not only in terms of brand, products and profitability, but also of unit sales. Zetsche left no doubt that all efforts are being made to achieve those four goals, with the support of a large number of activities.
With regards to the Mercedes-Benz brand, Daimler is further strengthening its core brand values of fascination, perfection and responsibility to broaden the customer base and address younger customers. This will be facilitated by the five new models of the new-generation compact car, and also by highly emotive vehicles such as the CLS Shooting Brake.
With products, the automobile portfolio is being rejuvenated and a third product offensive has been started with 10 new derivatives for which no predecessor models exist to be launched by the year 2015. For example, the luxury segment will be enlarged by expanding the S-Class range from three to six models with highly profitable derivatives.
The planned activities also include further reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. “We are convinced that ‘cool’ and ‘green’ can peacefully coexist in our garages,” said Zetsche. Mercedes-Benz Cars will be able to reduce the average CO2 emissions of its automobiles sold in the European Union from today’s 150 grams per kilometer to 125 g/km by the year 2016. The new A-Class will start with emissions of 99 g/km.
In order to further increase unit sales, the automobile portfolio will be successively expanded and geographical presence will be broadened by expanding sales structures and production capacities, especially in the NAFTA region and in China.
There will be a positive impact on the progress to the top of the premium segment from the fact that the automotive industry continues to be a growth industry. According to forecasts, worldwide car sales will increase from 60 million units in 2011 to 100 million units in 2020. China is already the world’s biggest market in terms of unit sales and will remain so in 2020, but the country’s car market will have doubled by then. China therefore remains a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz Cars’ growth strategy. The second-most important sales market, the United States, is projected to have an annual average growth rate in the premium segment of 5.6%. And India will advance to become the world’s third-largest car market by 2020.
Irrespective of this development, a clear target has been set of “achieving above-average growth in those markets and of further improving our competitive position,” stated Zetsche. In this context, he affirmed the medium-term target for unit sales of Mercedes-Benz: sales of more than 1.5 million vehicles in 2014 and more than 1.6 million in 2015 (2011: 1,279,100). Zetsche pointed out that the emphasis was on the word “more.”
Mercedes-Benz Cars will further improve its profitability by means of project-related cooperation such as with Renault/Nissan, as well as through savings achieved from the module and platform strategies and improved efficiency in the value chain. At the same time, the enhanced flexibility of the international production network will make it possible to react faster to fluctuations in demand.
Due to savings from the module strategy and further efficiency actions, the division will be able to compensate for the cost burden anticipated in the automotive industry from rising raw-material prices and investments to reduce CO2 emissions, thus safeguarding its profitability targets. “At Mercedes-Benz Cars, we are approaching our targeted return on sales of 10 percent, which we want to achieve on a sustained basis as of 2013 – on the assumption that our business environment will remain stable,” emphasized Zetsche.
How the Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy works in practice can first be seen in the compact-car segment. The new plant in Kecskemét is a state-of-the-art factory for Mercedes-Benz Cars; it will produce cars in conjunction with the plant in Rastatt and will make a key contribution to economy through volume flexibility.
Profitability in the compact-car segment will be additionally improved compared with the predecessor generation by producing a significantly higher volume of five different cars from the same architecture instead of two, and by spreading the production network over three plants (Rastatt, Kecskemét and Beijing).
On the occasion of the opening of the new plant for the production of the new B-Class, Daimler had invited investors and analysts to attend a division day in Kecskemét in Hungary.

By
Adji
The readers of Europe's biggest 4x4 magazine "Auto Bild Allrad" have spoken and reached a unanimous decision: the Mercedes-Benz M-Class is "Car of the Year 2012".
More than 120,000 readers cast their votes as part of an online survey in which a total of 157 all-wheel-drive models were put under the spotlight. In the category "Off-road vehicles and SUVs over €40,000", a good 12 percent preferred the M-Class and as a result voted the multi-talented vehicle as the overall winner. As the most successful Mercedes-Benz SUV with sales of more than 1,000,000 vehicles, the M-Class celebrated its premiere in 1997 and is seen as the forerunner to all modern premium SUVs. In 2011, the third generation of the model was launched. It boasts impressive performance both on and off the road, and has established its position as the champion of efficiency. A further three model series from Mercedes-Benz also featured among the top ten vehicles in this category in the guise of the G, GL and GLK-Class.
The R-Class, the impressive touring SUV offering high levels of comfort on long journeys as well as a generous and variable interior with up to seven seats, was voted into second place in the category for "All-wheel-drive vans and buses".

AMG Customer Sports Seasonal Outlook 2012: The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 - more than 45 start positions around the globe in 2012
By
Adji
Customer Sports Programme of AMG vigourously starts the 2012 season. Altogether, more than 45 SLS AMG GT3s will be entered for more than 15 race series on four continents. The German team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport will enter two SLS AMG GT3 for the new FIA GT1 World Championship. Six gullwing cars are expected to fight for the overall win in the 24 Hours Nürburgring. Eight SLS AMG GT3s will be entered in the German ADAC GT Masters. The newly-formed French team, which the eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb is part of, will participate in the French GT Championship. The cooperation team and defending winner HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will face the competition in the FIA GT3 European Championship.
Commanding fights for the lead, top-class drivers and the who's who among sports car brands – this is what national and international race series, in which customer teams enter the SLS AMG GT3 as racing car, have in common. Inspired by 26 race wins in 2011, the 1-2-3 in the Dubai 24-hours race (12th to 14th January 2012) and the second place in the Bathurst 12 Hour Race in Australia (26th February 2012), the gullwing car from Affalterbach has proved that it is a serious rival for competitors. In mid-March, many of the customer teams took advantage of the opportunity to optimally prepare for the season in test drives and setting drives on the race track of Paul Ricard in Le Castellet in Southern France.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board, Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "Mercedes-AMG is proud of the fact that the SLS AMG GT3 is given such a positive feedback by customer teams. In the motorsport season of 2012, AMG takes part with a team of three: With the gullwing car in the customer sports programme, the new Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé in the popular DTM and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team in Formula 1 we are active all over the world. As AMG celebrates its 45th birthday, the best conditions for an exciting anniversary year are provided!"
Uli Fritz, head of AMG Customer Sports: "We want to thank the teams, which are already with us for the second year, for their confidence in us and we appreciate the new teams in the family of AMG Customer Sports. The fact that more than 45 SLS AMG GT3s are meanwhile taking part in races around the globe does not only show the great performance of the gullwing car but also proves our philosophy of using the SLS AMG GT3 merely for customer sports, not for factory entries."
Thomas Jäger, coordinator of AMG Customer Sports: "The popularity of the SLS AMG GT3 is based on four factors: Performance, reliability, its uncomplex driveability and a good parts supply. We are working hard to continue improving all of those factors in the new 2012 season as well. The gullwing car is also appreciated for its exceptional safety level with the carbon safety cell for the driver, known from the DTM cars."
Eight SLS AMG GT3s in the ADAC GT Masters
With the first ADAC GT Masters held in 2007, the racing series has meanwhile become very popular. Not only is the number of 44 inscripted sports cars from 13 brands impressing, but also the fact that eight SLS AMG GT3s will be fighting for the title in 2012. HEICO Motorsport will enter four cars (Alex Margaritis / Lance David Arnold, Kenneth Heyer / Christiaan Frankenhout, Harald Proczyk / Dominik Baumann and Andreas Simonsen / Maximilian Buhk). Thus HEICO Motorsport has the former Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Alex Margaritis, who is the current champion of the GT Masters, among their drivers.
In a cooperation, the teams HEICO Motorsport and Gravity-Charouz Racing will enter another gullwing car. The drivers for the HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will be Erik Janis / Jan Stovicek. MS Racing will enter two SLS AMG GT3s (Maximilian Götz / Sebastian Asch and Daniel Dobitsch / Florian Stoll). Seyffarth Motorsport (Jan Seyffarth / Maximilian Meyer) will enter one car. The ADAC GT Masters begins on 31st March in Oschersleben and comprises 16 races. Per racing weekend, two races are held and the private television station Kabel 1 will show live broadcasts of all races in full length.
VLN on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with ten races
The Nürburgring VLN endurance championship came into existence more than 30 years ago. The race series is traditionally held on the legendary Nordschleife ("north loop") and the short layout of the Grand Prix track. The teams of Black Falcon, HEICO Motorsport and ROWE RACING will each enter two cars for the VLN. Black Falcon Team Manager Sean Paul Breslin: "We have already known the SLS AMG GT3 since 2010. It is a fast, reliable car with a level of security which is currently unmatched by any other race car. The first of a total of ten VLN races will take place parallelly to the ADAC GT Masters on the 31st of March. About 200 cars are expected.
24h race Nürburgring - highlight of the season
The motorsport scene is awaiting this year's 24h race Nürburgring with much excitement. The event will already take place from 16th to 20st of May and is defined as the highlight of the 2012 season by many German motorsport fans. As in the VLN, the teams of Black Falcon, HEICO Motorsport and ROWE RACING will be facing the traditional Eifel marathon with two cars each. Bernd Schneider (HEICO Motorsport) and Thomas Jäger (ROWE RACING) will be supporting the customer teams as part of the AMG support programme and will actively take part in the race. More than 700 drivers and almost 200 race cars will be entered for the traditional endurance race.
FIA GT1 World Championship with two SLS AMG GT3s
None of the races of the new FIA GT1 World Championship will take place in Germany. However, there are many indicators that the World Championship will be offering exciting motorsport: Each car brand will have two cars in start positions and nine teams of the international sports car elite confirmed their participation with cars of different manufacturers. Due to the change in regulations from the GT1 to the GT3 category, even an increase in the number of excellent performances can be expected.
The German team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport will participate with two SLS AMG GT3s. The gullwing cars will be driven by Marc Basseng / Markus Winkelhock and Thomas Jäger / Nicky Pastorelli. As part of the AMG support programme, Thomas Jäger will be supporting the team during the beginning of the season.
Team manager René Münnich: "We want to win the World Championship this year. We fought for the drivers' and the team title for a long time in 2011. The new SLS AMG GT3 is a fast and reliable race car – the conditions for the new season could hardly be better." The FIA GT1 Championship comprises ten races in nine countries, among which you can also find emerging markets such as China, India and Russia. The first race of the season will take place in the French location Nogaro on 8th April 2012 and the final is scheduled for 2nd December 2012 on Buddh International Circuit near New Delhi.
FIA GT3 European Championship with defending winner in start position
The FIA GT1 World Championship and the FIA GT3 European Championship will start at the same time. The first six of a total of 12 races will be held on the same tracks. Every weekend, two races will take place. The defending winner HEICO Motorsport will participate with two SLS AMG GT3s in cooperation with Gravity-Charouz Racing here as well. The cockpits of the HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will be shared by Dominik Baumann / Maxi-milian Bukh as well as Max Nilsson / Mika Vähämäki.
The team of the eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb forms a new part of the 2012 season. Sébastien Loeb Racing will face the competition in the French GT Championship with one gullwing car (Frédéric Gabillon / Gilles Vannelet).
Blancpain Endurance Championship with four teams from four countries
Four teams from four countries will participate in the Blancpain Endurance Championship: The Belgian team Viage KRK-Racing will enter two gullwing cars driven by the teams Karl Wendlinger / Anthony Kumpen / Koen Wauters und Raf Vanthoor / Dennis Retera / Marius Ritskes. Black Falcon will also enter two gullwing cars. As in 2011, the British team Preci-Spark with the twins David Jones, Godfrey Jones and Mike Jordan will also participate in the Championship. Premium Motorsports Poland will participate for the first time with one car.
In face of the Blancpain Endurance Championship's starting field with 50 cars, it will definitely be an event with commiting motorsport. The first race will take place in Monza, Italy on 15th April 2012. The highlight of the season will be the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 28th July 2012. An endurance race from the Blancpain race series is also scheduled for Germany: The penultimate race out of a total of six races will be held on the Nürburgring on 23rd September.
From Malaysia to Brazil and as far as Australia
Besides the big Championships, which are mainly held on European tracks, customer teams will also be driving the SLS AMG GT3 on the continents of Asia, South America and Australia as well as in smaller national race series.

Comprehensive child safety programme for the new B-Class: Big on safety for little passengers
By
Adji
The new B-Class represents a particularly family-oriented model from Mercedes-Benz. The comprehensive range of child seats for every age and weight group is typical of the standard of safety offered by Mercedes-Benz. The range features ISOFIX attachment points as standard, plus options including rear seats with integrated child seats (IKS), automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) on the front passenger seat and the comprehensive programme of Mercedes-tested child restraint systems: the BABY-SAFE plus infant seat, the DUO plus seat and the KIDFIX booster seat with adjustable backrest.
Unsecured children face a seven times greater risk of injury in an accident than children protected by restraint systems. With this in mind, Mercedes-Benz continually strives to improve the protection of children in cars. Accident research and accident statistics show that children require special restraint systems on account of their anatomy. The customary automatic seat belt does not represent the ideal means of securing children in cars. Varying requirements apply, according to children’s age group, height and weight. Mercedes-Benz thus offers different child seats tailored to the physical characteristics which define the respective age groups.
As an entry-level model there is the BABY-SAFE plus infant seat, which is suitable for children in the 0+ weight group (0-13 kg/0 to approx. 15 months). The DUO plus model, available with or without ACSR, is suitable for infants belonging to weight group I (9-18 kg/approx. 8 months to 4 years). The KIDFIX child seat, also available with or without ACSR, is ideal for weight groups II and III (15-36 kg/age approx. three and a half to twelve).
Mercedes-Benz innovation: automatic child seat recognition (ACSR)
Automatic child seat recognition is a special safety feature from Mercedes-Benz. It was developed especially for rear-facing infant seats in which babies and infants weighing up to 13 kg (approx. 15 months) sit on the front passenger seat, facing opposite to the direction of travel. The advantage of fitting the seat in this manner is that the backrest of the child seat forms an extensive buffer zone which braces the entire upper part of the body and the head in a frontal collision. As a result, the head remains in its customary position in relation to the upper part of the body, thus reducing the strain on the neck. As the front passenger airbag has to be deactivated when fitting a rear-facing infant seat, Mercedes-Benz developed an automatic child seat recognition system more than ten years ago. This is a passive system which detects when a child seat is fitted to the front passenger seat and automatically deactivates the vehicle's front passenger airbag. This is particularly vital when an infant seat is fitted in rear-facing direction. An indicator lamp signals that the airbag is deactivated.
Integrated child seats
Another development from Mercedes-Benz is integrated child seats (IKS), a system which is permanently installed in the vehicle. IKS is optionally available for many model series. The child seats fold out of the rear bench seat at the touch of a button to provide safe and secure accommodation for two children aged 2 and above and weighing up to 36 kilograms (spanning the age group from roughly two to twelve). When the child seats are no longer required, they can simply be folded back into the rear bench seat.
In Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the occupant cell, seats, airbags and belts form a perfectly coordinated system. The child seat further enhances these safety functions, ensuring that youngsters are just as safe as adults in an accident. Mercedes-Benz child seats undergo the most rigorous laboratory and crash tests to verify their effectiveness. Beyond the mandatory tests according to stringent statutory regulations, the company also carries out its own tests, such as frontal impact at a speed of 64 km/h.
Child seats from Mercedes-Benz: the right system for every age group
Intelligent safety solutions
Children who are not secured correctly when a car is on the move are at extreme risk in the event of an accident. They are seven times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than children who are protected by appropriate restraint systems. In 2010, 49 children aged under 15 were killed in passenger cars involved in accidents in Germany and almost 10,000 were injured, according to information from the Federal Statistical Office. This represents a drop of around 50 percent in child fatalities in comparison to the beginning of the decade, while the number of children injured in passenger cars has fallen by around 30 percent over the same period.
A random check undertaken by the German ADAC automobile club in October 2011 revealed that around a third of children travelling in cars are still not secured correctly, however. Five percent of the children aged between six and twelve in the check were not even wearing a seat belt, while 20 percent were not sitting in a child seat appropriate to their age group. 28 percent of infants were not secured in the proper manner and three percent of those aged under 6 were travelling in vehicles without being secured in any manner whatsoever. In this spot sample the ADAC checked a total of 2325 children in 1569 vehicles outside schools and nurseries in eleven federal German states.
Only special seats afford optimum protection for small passengers
Another look at the relevant statistics confirms that the seat belt for adults does not represent the best means of securing children: the risk of injury in an accident stands at only eleven percent in a child seat, as compared to 25 percent when children are secured with a seat belt intended for adults.
This is attributable to children’s anatomy. Adults and children differ not only in terms of height and weight, but also with regard to physique and body proportions. The head of a new-born child accounts for around one quarter of its body weight, for example, while the corresponding figure for an adult is only around 18 percent. The bone structure also differs.
The logical consequence of these biological differences is that children require restraint systems which are tailored exactly to their special needs and their age, whereby different requirements apply among children according to age group, height and weight. Accordingly, Mercedes-Benz offers three removable child seats and one permanently installed system, ensuring the safety of children in all age groups. All the restraint systems meet Mercedes-Benz's high safety standards.
BABY-SAFE plus
BABY-SAFE plus offers very young babies weighing up to 13 kilograms (approx. 15 months) optimum protection, an ideal fit and the best possible comfort thanks to snug padding in "DaimlerSquare" fabric design. The infant seat is fitted opposite to the direction of travel, in order to offer the best possible support for young babies' sensitive cervical vertebrae. In the event of a collision, the seat stays the child's entire body. This reduces localised stress substantially. High side bolsters and a particularly deep seat shell afford babies even better protection. In case of side impact, this entails major safety benefits.
The child is secured in the infant seat by means of an integrated 5-point belt. BABY-SAFE plus is attached to the vehicle using the three-point seat belt. The BABY-SAFE plus infant seat comes with the automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) as standard. When the infant seat is fixed to the front passenger seat of a vehicle which is also equipped with ACSR, the airbag electronics detect the fitted seat and deactivate the airbag on the front passenger side automatically. This is particularly important when child seats are fitted facing towards the rear. When the child seat is removed, the airbag is operational once again. The automatic child seat recognition system is not only convenient but also safe, as no buttons need to be pressed in order to deactivate the airbag. This also means there is no danger of forgetting to reactivate the front passenger airbag when the child seat is removed.
BABY-SAFE plus comes with a standard-fit sunroof which protects the young passengers from intensive sunlight.
DUO plus
The Mercedes-Benz child seat DUO plus is suitable for babies and young children weighing between nine and 18 kilograms (age range approx. 8 months to 4 years). DUO plus comes with ISOFIX as standard and is optionally available with automatic child seat recognition (ACSR). It is fitted in the direction of travel and can be attached either with the ISOFIX system or using a three-point seat belt. ISOFIX is an internationally standardised connection system between vehicle and child seat. DUO plus features two fastening hooks which are slotted into two metal eyelets between the seat surface and the vehicle seat backrest. DUO plus is additionally attached to the vehicle seat backrest by means of a so-called Top Tether in the upper area of the child seat. The child seat is then firmly connected to the vehicle's body. The vehicle's seat belt is not required when the child seat is attached with ISOFIX and Top Tether. ISOFIX and Top Tether anchor points are required by law in new vehicles in Europe and the USA. ISOFIX and Top Tether attach the forward-facing child restraint system to the vehicle more effectively than when the child seat is secured using the seat belt, and thus offer better protection.
The child is secured in the seat by means of a harness belt system (five-point belt). The belt height adjustment feature allows the seat to "grow" with its user. The padding on the shoulder belts is designed to limit forces acting on the particularly vulnerable areas of the head and neck. It effectively reduces the strain on the head and neck when the impact of an accident exceeds a certain severity. To keep youngsters not only safe but also comfortable, the backrest shell of the DUO plus seat incorporates a shift feature which enables the seat to be inclined in a position suitable for a sleeping child. DUO plus comes in the "Limited Black" fabric design. This hard-wearing seat cover is removable and washable.
KIDFIX
The third model in Mercedes-Benz's child seat range goes by the name of KIDFIX. This seat is ideal for children weighing between 15 and 36 kg (age range approx. three and a half to twelve). Child and seat are secured using the vehicle's three-point seat belt. The raised seat position corrects the positioning of the belt passing over the pelvis and shoulders, adapting it to the child's anatomy. The belt guides at the sides ensure that the lap belt does not slip into the area of the child's abdomen. The KIDFIX seat can additionally be attached to the vehicle's ISOFIX anchorage points, whereby the child continues to be secured by the vehicle's seat belt. This has the advantage that the child seat is positioned correctly in the vehicle and, in particular, ensures that it does not fly around the interior and endanger the vehicle's occupants when it is unoccupied.
KIDFIX incorporates a height-adjustable backrest. Apart from its comfort aspect, this backrest also ensures that the Mercedes KIDFIX child seat can be used for children up to the age of twelve. KIDFIX additional features a sitting and sleeping position and additional lateral support for head and body in the form of pronounced side bolsters and side head restraints. In the event of side impact, this design ensures that the child is not shaken too severely from side to side.
The automatic child seat recognition system is optionally available for fitting KIDFIX on the front passenger seat. The child seat can also be used without the system, however. In this case, the front passenger seat is to be moved into its rearmost position. KIDFIX comes in the "Limited Black" fabric design. This hard-wearing seat cover is removable and washable.
Complete exchangeable covers in DaimlerSquare design are available for all child seat models. Replacement covers for the head and shoulder section of the DUO and for the head section of the KIDFIX come in flannel grey or chilli red. Replacement covers are available for all child seat models, either as exchangeable covers for the head section in flannel grey or chilli red or as complete exchangeable covers in "DaimlerSquare" design.
Integrated child seats (IKS)
The integrated child seats (IKS) form a system which is permanently installed in the vehicle, consisting of two child seats which fold out of the rear bench seat at the touch of a button to safely accommodate two children aged two and above and weighing up to 36 kilograms (age range approx. two to twelve). When the seats are no longer required, they can simply be folded away. The rear bench seat is then available for adults again. Integrated child seats are offered as optional extras for numerous model series.
Additional side head restraints from the Mercedes-Benz genuine accessories programme (IKS includes one side head restraint as standard) are recommendable for increased safety in the event of side impact. As the child is also able to rest its head to the side, these also provide for enhanced comfort. Integrated child seats can be upgraded with the separately available padded table into a safe restraint system for children aged 2 and above and weighing up to 18 kg (approx. 4 years of age). The padded table is secured by means of the vehicle's three-point seat belt and offers protection in a manner tailored specifically to small children's anatomy by providing a large surface area to brace the abdomen area.
Mercedes-Benz child seats at a glance:
As the growth process may vary greatly among children, the age ranges specified for the different child seat models represent only rough terms of reference. Different choices of seat may be appropriate in individual cases. In choosing a suitable seat, the child's weight should thus always be the decisive factor and the weight range of the current child seat should always be fully exhausted before moving up to the next model. A vitally important factor is that the child's head must never protrude beyond the backrest.
Legal requirements in the field of child safety
National and ECE regulations
Since 1 April 1993 it has been mandatory for children travelling in motor vehicles to be secured in child seats. Paragraph 21 (1a) of the German Road Traffic Ordinance stipulates the following in this connection: "Children up to the age of twelve who are shorter than 150 centimetres may only travel in motor vehicles in seats for which seat belts are mandatory if restraint devices are used for children which meet the requirements stipulated in Article 2 (1), letter c of directive 91/671/EEC of 16 December 1991 relating to the compulsory use of safety belts and the compulsory use of child restraint systems in motor vehicles (Official EC Journal no. L 373, p. 26), as amended by Article 1, no. 3 of directive 2003/20/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 8 April 2003 (Official EU Journal no. L 115, p. 63), and which are suitable for the child."
Supplementary note: Use is thus mandatory for children who are shorter than 150 centimetres or under twelve years of age. This means that a twelve year-old child of only 140 centimetres in height or a ten year-old child of 155 centimetres in height does not have to use a child seat, as compliance with one of the two criteria is sufficient. Mercedes-Benz nevertheless recommends the use of child seats up to a height of 1.50 m, even if the child is twelve or older.
The German legislature has imposed sanctions for contraventions of the mandatory obligation for children to be secured correctly in their seats, with fines ranging from € 30 (child only secured with adult seat belt) to € 50 and one penalty point on the driver's licence (several children not properly secured). Insurance companies also reserve the right to reduce compensation claims when child seats are not used or are used in an incorrect manner.
Officially approved child seats are identifiable by the orange-coloured ECE approval label which is obligatory on such seats. All the child seats in Mercedes-Benz's programme comply with the latest safety standard, which is indicated by an approval number beginning with "04". The label also specifies the weight range for which the child seat is suitable.
Since the amended version of Section 21 (1a) and (1b) of the German Road Traffic Ordinance entered into force on 1 March 2007, it has also been mandatory for children to travel in child seats on the rear seats of taxis. This obligation is restricted to a requirement for taxi drivers to provide child seats corresponding to ECE group I (mandatory) and II/III, however, with the possibility of accommodating one to two children. Parents themselves are required to provide infant seats for very small babies.
The applicable legal requirements for child seats in Europe are stipulated in ECE regulation no. 44, which classifies the use of child seats into different groups (see table). As stated above, the defined age groups serve only as general reference points and the child's weight should always be the principal guiding factor.
The ECE regulation additionally classifies child seats according to different categories defining the possible use of the child seats in different vehicles:
ECE classification according to categories and form of use
All the specifications relating to possible use are provided on the orange ECE approval label which is mandatory on every child seat. Apart from the category and weight class, these specifications also include the licensing country and approval number. The letter "E" in a circle guarantees compliance with the applicable statutory ECE regulations; the number after the "E" indicates the country in which the child seat has been licensed.
Only child restraint systems approved in accordance with ECE 44/04 are now permitted for sale in Germany. Child seats with ECE 44/03 approval may still be used, however.
Strict regulations on child safety in Germany's neighbouring countries, too
Germany's neighbouring countries in Europe have regulations in place on children travelling in motor vehicles which are similar to those in Germany. Since 1 April 2010 a child seat has also been compulsory in Switzerland for children aged under 12 and up to a height of 150 cm.
Depending on the child's weight, the use of an infant seat, a child seat or a special seat cushion is required. In Austria, all children who are below 150 cm in height and under 14 years of age must be secured with a child restraint system or a child booster seat. Children who reach a height of 150 cm prior to their 14th birthday only require to be secured with a corresponding seat belt.
Since 1 January 2001 it has additionally been illegal to sell child car seats in Austria which do not comply with version 03 of the ECE 44 safety standard (ECE 44/03) at least. Anyone selling child seats which do not meet the required safety standards (including private individuals) faces hefty fines.

ECE classifications according to weight and age

The first Travego Edition 1 delivered in Sweden
By
Adji
On 23.03.2012 the first Travego Edition 1 was delivered to the customer during the Swedish International Travel & Tourism Trade Fair in Gothenburg. Gunnar Jörs, a salesman at Mercedes-Benz Buses EvoBus Sverige AB, handed the vehicle over to Lennart Brunosson, General Manager of Lidbergs Buss AB. The Travego Edition 1 with a Euro VI drive system celebrated its world premiere at the Busworld show in Kortrijk in October 2011.
Travego Edition 1 is the first touring coach to meet the Euro VI emission standard
The Travego Edition 1 is the first touring coach to meet the future Euro VI emission standard, which comes into force from 2014. The vehicle features the new range of BlueEfficiency Power engines, a new transmission with new gearshift, a further upgraded, ergonomically optimised cockpit and new safety features. Customers with an eye to the future who opt for the Mercedes-Benz flagship can thus become trailblazers in terms of environmental friendliness.
High-torque Mercedes-Benz engine from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation
The Travego Edition 1 is powered by a vertically installed in-line six-cylinder engine from the new OM 471 series. From a displacement of 12.8 l it develops 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The high maximum torque is 2300 Nm at 1100 rpm. The engine features a unique common-rail injection system with pressure booster (X-PULSE). This delivers extremely precise fuel injection with cylinder-selective control, high injection pressures of up to 2100 bar and freely modulated injection – the prerequisites for low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions and smooth engine operation.
Additional advantages result from the highly effective three-stage exhaust brake and the asymmetric turbocharger. Despite exhaust gas recirculation, this ensures rapid response to accelerator movements for an agile driving performance. The torque characteristics of the new engine permit unusually low, fuel-saving engine speeds.
Conflict between emissions and fuel consumption resolved
The particularly stringent requirements of the future Euro VI emission standard for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX) generally stand in contradiction to the demands for further reduced particulate emissions and low fuel consumption. Mercedes‑Benz resolves these conflicting objectives with its unique new X-Pulse injection technology, in conjunction with a complex emission control system. This involves BlueTec engine technology with SCR and AdBlue injection, which has already proved its worth in more than 100,000 units, combined with exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter.
All in all, Euro VI in the Travego Edition I leads to a further dramatic reduction in pollutant emissions - without the increase in fuel consumption that was initially feared. At the same time AdBlue consumption is reduced by around 40 percent.
Ergonomically optimised driver's cockpit redesigned down to the last detail
The steering-column lever used to operate the gearshift is one of the most conspicuous modifications to the cockpit. This lever replaces the previous joystick on the dashboard. It is used to control all functions and yet, because of the intuitive nature of its operation, remains extremely user-friendly.
But the developers have also realised many more new ideas to optimise the ergonomics for the driver, for example a redesigned display concept. The use of pictograms, along with structured menu navigation via the new multifunction steering wheel, makes it appreciably simpler to access the various functions and displays.
The ignition and the engine start/stop system are controlled by a two-stage pushbutton switch. The switches in the cockpit have been rearranged according to function, and their number noticeably reduced by assigning them multiple purposes. In the Travego Edition 1 the place of the previous joystick shift lever is taken by an open stowage tray.
New safety system Attention Assist warns of drowsiness
The Travego Edition I is the first coach for which Attention Assist is available as a special equipment item. This is a system that registers parameters such as steering angle, speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, travelling time, control signals and driver changes. By correlating the data, Attention Assist draws inferences about the driver's alertness. If the data indicate a lack of concentration and drowsiness, a coffee cup symbol appears in the display to indicate that it is time to take a break.
Lidbergs Buss AB
The Swedish bus operator Lidbergs Buss AB is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. In addition to coach tours with its own travel agency, the company operates regular service and school buses. With the addition of the new Travego Edition 1, the company's Daimler-only fleet will total eight Mercedes-Benz coaches and one Setra coach. Lidbergs Buss AB is represented throughout Sweden, and also operates tours to other European countries such as Denmark and Germany.
