Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1 is "Coach of the Year 2012" in Spain
The Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1 is "Coach of the Year 2012" in Spain. Alberto Fermoso, Head of Sales for Mercedes-Benz Buses Spain, was presented with the award by Rafael Barbadillo, President of the Spanish passenger association Asintra, at a ceremony in Madrid.
Since 1998, a jury of experts from across the transport industry has voted for the best new commercial vehicles on behalf of specialist truck magazines Viajeros and Transporte 3 (Publisher: Editec).
Travego Edition 1: the first touring coach to meet the Euro VI emissions standard
The Travego Edition 1 is the first coach to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard, which becomes binding at the beginning of 2014. The Travego Edition 1 features the new range of BlueEfficiency Power engines, a new transmission with new gearshift, a further upgraded, ergonomically optimised cockpit, and new safety features. Customers with an eye to the future who opt for the Mercedes-Benz flagship can thus become trailblazers in terms of environmental friendliness.
High-torque Mercedes-Benz engine from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation
The engine of the Travego Edition 1 is a vertically installed in-line six-cylinder from the new OM 471 series. From a displacement of 12.8 l it develops 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The high maximum torque runs up to 2300 Nm at 1100 rpm. These figures, together with the characteristics of the new power plant, guarantee outstanding performance. The engine features the unique common-rail injection system X-Pulse with pressure booster. This delivers extremely precise fuel injection with cylinder-selective control, high injection pressures of up to 2100 bar and freely modulated injection – the prerequisites for low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions and smooth engine operation.
Additional advantages result from the highly effective three-stage exhaust brake and the asymmetric turbocharger. Despite exhaust gas recirculation this ensures rapid response to accelerator movements to the benefit of agile driving performance. The torque characteristics of the new engine permit unusually low, fuel-saving engine speeds.
Conflict between emissions and fuel consumption resolved
The particularly stringent requirements of the future Euro VI emissions standard for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX) generally stand in contradiction to the demands for further reduced particulate emissions and low fuel consumption. Mercedes‑Benz resolves these conflicting objectives with its unique new X-Pulse injection technology, in conjunction with a complex emission control system. This involves the BlueTec engine technology with SCR and AdBlue injection that has already been proven in more than 100,000 units being combined with exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter.
All in all, Euro VI in the Travego Edition I leads to a further dramatic reduction in pollutant emissions - without the increase in fuel consumption that was initially feared. At the same time AdBlue consumption is reduced by around 40 percent.
Euro VI components have no effect on passenger and luggage capacity
For optimum weight distribution the developers relocated the fuel tank to a position forward of the front axle, in a swap with the batteries, while at the same time the vehicle weight was further reduced through the optimisation of standard production components (e.g. windows and air conditioning system). In this way an important target was achieved: Euro VI buses should not show any negative impact on passenger and luggage capacity compared with the previous Euro V models.
Ergonomically optimised driver's cockpit redesigned down to the last detail
The steering-column lever used to operate the gearshift is one of the most conspicuous modifications to have been made to the cockpit. This lever replaces the joystick on the dashboard used until now. It is used to control all functions and yet, because of the intuitive nature of its operation, remains extremely user-friendly.
But the developers have realised many more new ideas besides to optimise the ergonomics for the driver, for example a redesigned display concept. The use of pictograms, along with structured menu navigation via the new multifunction steering wheel, makes it appreciably simpler to access the various functions and displays.
The ignition and the engine start/stop system are controlled by a two-stage pushbutton switch. The switches in the cockpit have been rearranged according to function and their number noticeably reduced by assigning them multiple purposes. The joystick shift lever used hitherto is replaced in the Travego Edition 1 with an open stowage tray.
New safety system Attention Assist warns of drowsiness
The Travego Edition I is the first coach for which Attention Assist is available as a special equipment item. This is a system that registers parameters such as steering angle, speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, travelling time, control signals and driver changes. By correlating the data, Attention Assist draws inferences about the driver's condition. If the data indicate a lack of concentration and drowsiness, a coffee cup symbol appears on the display as a hint that it's time to take a break.

F1 Barcelona 2011 - SAT - Qualifying - Lewis Hamilton 3rd, Jenson Button 5th

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Barcelona, Spain, May 21, 2011
LEWIS HAMILTON
- MP4-26A-03
- P3 programme: 4th, 1m23.068s (+1.361s), 13 laps
- Qualifying:
- Q1: 14th, 1m24.370s (on Primes)
- Q2: 4th, 1m22.148s (on Options)
- Q3: 3rd overall, 1m21.961s (on Options)
“The Red Bulls look very strong, but I’m going to do everything I can to jump at least one – if not both – of them at the start. I hope I can attack tomorrow.
“When you start from the clean side of the grid, you automatically have a much better opportunity of getting a good start – and, this year, I’ve usually been on the dirty side, so tomorrow will be a bit of a bonus for me.
“Third on the grid is actually a perfect position – because, if you get a good start, you can slipstream the guys in front. My aim is to be P1 by Turn One! It doesn’t normally go that way, but as long as I don’t go backwards I’ll be happy.
“When you’re trying to eke every last drop out of the car, you sometimes lock the front wheels – and that’s just what happened on my final lap. While the flat-spot to the front-left doesn’t look perfect, we’ll manage it by re-balancing the wheels, so it’ll be fine.
“We’ve definitely made an improvement this weekend. We’ll keep pushing: we don’t give up, and with the DRS we should see some good racing tomorrow.”
JENSON BUTTON
- MP4-26A-04
- P3 programme: 5th, 1m23.214s (+1.507s), 14 laps
- Qualifying:
- Q1: 15th, 1m24.428s (on Primes)
- Q2: 3rd, 1m22.050s (on Options)
- Q3: 5th overall, 1m21.996s (on Options)
“I feel that I did a good lap, so I’m happy with that; my car got better and better throughout the session – I was only three-hundredths slower than Lewis. I was a bit unlucky not to be third, then Fernando got between us as well, so you can see how close it is out there.
“One major positive is that, like Lewis, I’ll be starting on the clean side of the grid. Another is that, also like Lewis, I’ve got two sets of [Option] tyres that have only done one lap and another set that’s brand new – that’s going to be key tomorrow.
“Having your tyres in good condition makes such a difference – so I think we’re looking in very good shape.
“There’s a big difference between the Option and the Prime here, so there’ll be some different strategies tomorrow. We’ll be looking at the strategy tonight and I’m sure we can make the harder tyre work for us too.”
MARTIN WHITMARSH
Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“We wanted to come through qualifying having retained one set of Option tyres for both our drivers, as did Red Bull, and it was for that reason that we were determined to tackle Q1 on Prime tyres. There’s a big speed differential between Options and Primes here in Barcelona, so most teams had no choice other than to use Options in Q1, for fear of not making it through to Q2. Fortunately, by contrast, like Red Bull, we were able to conserve our Options.
“The final result at the end of Q3 was P3 for Lewis and P5 for Jenson – in other words good grid slots on the clean side of the track for both our drivers.
“In actual fact they may have been a little quicker had they gone out when it was less breezy, and had we been able to get our KERS Hybrid up to optimal operating temperature; but I don’t think we’d have been quite as quick as the Red Bulls. To be clear, our KERS Hybrid is an excellent system, thanks in large part to the superlative work done by Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines, but we struggled to get it up to optimal operating temperature today.
“Even so, we’re usually a little closer to the Red Bulls’ pace in race trim than we are in qualifying, and we’ve got two brilliant racers in Lewis and Jenson, and as I say they’ll start from the clean side of the track; so, all in all, let’s just say that we’re looking forward to an exciting race tomorrow.”

F1 Barcelona 2011 - SAT - Qualifying - Nico Rosberg 7th, Michael Schumacher 10th
By
Adji

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Barcelona, Spain, May 21, 2011
Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher qualified in seventh and tenth positions respectively today for the Spanish Grand Prix.
• With a focus on saving tyres for the race, the team took a measured approach to Q2 & Q3 with one run for each car
• Michael’s car suffered a KERS failure in Q3 and he did not complete a timed lap to save a set of fresh tyres
• Nico will start the race on the soft option tyres whilst Michael is able to choose which tyres he will start on
Nico Rosberg
“With our focus on the race pace this weekend, it was to be expected that we might suffer a little in Qualifying. However I am not too disappointed with seventh place as we should be stronger in the race tomorrow, and I believe we can aim to be better than in Istanbul. I have one set of new tyres left which is good for us, and I hope that we can move up with the right strategy.”
Michael Schumacher
“Unfortunately in Q3, my KERS system did not work but we reacted in the best possible way. We took the decision to go out on prime tyres to be able to react if other cars did the same. As no-one did, we came in without setting a time so we can now choose our strategy for tomorrow. I will certainly try to have another of the good starts that I have made recently, make up some positions right at the beginning, and take it from there. With DRS and KERS, overtaking is possible even in Barcelona, so it is important to use your tyres well, and I still have a set of fresh tyres left. I will definitely try to make the best out of it.”
Ross Brawn
“We had a fairly good qualifying session today whilst being mindful of preparing for the race and being in the best possible position for tomorrow. We clearly couldn’t have challenged the cars right at the front of the grid, however Nico did a very good job, and he is in great shape for tomorrow’s race. Unfortunately with Michael, we incurred a KERS problem of a nature which made it difficult to think that he could achieve a competitive time, and therefore he did not complete a lap. This has the advantage of giving us maximum choice for his tyre strategy for tomorrow.”
Norbert Haug
“Michael’s car suffered a KERS problem before his planned Q3 lap, and therefore we decided not to use another set of fresh tyres. Our strategy in qualifying concentrated from lap one on saving tyres for the race and that is what we have achieved today, albeit probably to the cost of a better place on the grid. Nico got the best possible result under these circumstances. We are sorry for Michael as he definitely would be starting further up the grid without the KERS issue. However tomorrow is the race, and our aim is to repeat what we have achieved in the last two races; to be placed in the top five at the finish line.”

F1 Barcelona 2011 - FRI - Free Practice (VMM)

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Barcelona, Spain, May 20, 2011
LEWIS HAMILTON
- MP4-26A-03
- P1 programme: 19 lap, 1m26.988s (+1.846s), 6th
- P2 programme: 27 laps, 1m22.509s (+0.039s), 2nd
“It’s difficult to get an accurate read on pace: we stuck to our programme today and didn’t appear to be too far off, but you never know what fuel-loads or engine levels the other teams are running.
“Still, we got some good data and made some positive improvements so, in all likelihood, we look as competitive today as we have in the past. We have taken some small steps forward – we put a new front-wing on and it naturally appeared to be a little bit better.
“Globally, it’s not too bad. It didn’t feel too good this morning on the harder tyre, which was difficult to switch on and difficult to make last, but this afternoon’s running was very positive.
“There’s a big difference between the two Pirelli compounds - and that will hopefully have a positive impact on the show this weekend!”
JENSON BUTTON
- MP4-26A-04
- P1 programme: 22 laps, 1m27.138s (+1.996s), 9th
- P2 programme: 32 laps, 1m23.188s (+0.718s), 4th
“This morning was spent running through the new systems on the car; this afternoon was the time to push a bit harder and get a proper feel for things. I’m not particularly happy with the balance - I’m struggling with the rear-end, which isn’t something I like - but I’m going to work to improve that overnight.
“There is more pace in the car, we’ve just got to unleash it and find a balance that I like. The longer run was reasonable, even if we got a slightly different result than we expected.
“But it’s all good information and I think we can get a good balance for the race - now I need to focus on sorting out the rear-end for qualifying.”
MARTIN WHITMARSH
Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“For this morning’s session, we deliberately followed separate programmes on each car to ensure we could log as much data as possible with our planned upgrades. We limited running to the same fuel-load and the same tyres for the entirety of the session, and also ran without DRS; that meant that our times throughout P1 were not particularly representative.
“However, we logged a significant amount of positive data and were able to merge our two divergent development paths into a singular programme for this afternoon - with encouraging results. While neither Lewis nor Jenson were completely happy with the balance of their cars, it seems as if we’ve made some positive progress.
“Inevitably, we still have a significant amount of data to sift through this evening, but we feel confident that we can take a further step in the right direction for tomorrow. All in all, a positive day.”
