While travelling on the M40, a journey it has done literally hundreds of times, Mr & Mrs Lipscomb’s 20 year old Mercedes-Benz 190D 2.5 reached a significant milestone – 250,000 miles – and what an interesting journey it’s been.
Now living in Farnham Common, Mr & Mrs Lipscomb previously lived and travelled throughout Europe in their Mercedes-Benz 190D. Over the years the sturdy car had a tow bar fitted to tow Mrs Lipscomb’s horse box to various locations across the country. Still used on a daily basis around town, the 190D also frequently travels to and from the New Forest (nearly a 200 mile round trip).
Mr & Mrs Lipscomb have been loyal customers of Hughes of Beaconsfield for over 45 years and bought their first Mercedes in 1975. They purchased the Mercedes-Benz 190D from new at Mercedes-Benz of Beaconsfield in 1992 and have been back every year since to regularly maintain it and keep it running in tip top condition.
Mr Lipscomb said “We have built a great rapport with the service team here at Beaconsfield, and over the year’s characters such as Fred Greenwood and Raj Silva have taken great care of both our car and us.”
Since the introduction of the 190 in 1982 – the progenitor of today’s C-Class - the Mercedes-Benz compact saloon has been one of the most innovative and best-selling models in the company’s range. With over 8.5 million models sold over the last 29 years, its success has been rooted in delivering Mercedes-Benz core values of peerless engineering, understated styling, cutting edge technology and four-season dependability. The 190D is well known for its extreme reliability and ruggedness doing many miles without any major work.
“At the time the 190D was the best car around for our needs and it has been totally reliable ever since. We have always found Mercedes-Benz to be the first to have the best technology, one of our favourites was the introduction of air-conditioning!” said Lipscomb.
When asked for their tips on keeping such a reliable and well looked after car they advised “we always look after our car by keeping to the vehicles service intervals and taking it to a dealer that knows it the best. We also keep our car protected from the elements in a garage as much as possible and drive carefully.”
Louise Jenkins, Mercedes-Benz of Beaconsfield Service Manager comments “it is a pleasure to look after Mr & Mrs Lipscomb and their vehicles including the 190D. We look after many young classics and it is exciting to help them get to 250,000 miles and beyond. We are determined to help keep these classics on the road so our customers can enjoy them for many years to come.”

Public transport in Istanbul shifts into a higher gear with a major order for 221 Mercedes-Benz city buses
The brand with the star shines: A new major order for 221 Mercedes-Benz Conecto articulated buses has been placed by the public transportation provider IETT to update its fleet of city buses in the metropolis on the Bosphorus. The new order allows Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Türk to strengthen its partnership of over forty years with IETT, more than 50 percent of whose vehicles are Mercedes-Benz products. With its fleet of around 3,000 city buses, IETT is dedicated to providing reliable and environ-mentally friendly passenger transport in the metropolis, Istanbul. IETT, which was established in 1871, operates light rail systems, subways, regular-service buses, and utilizes the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) mobility concept.
Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses, underscores the importance of the three-figured order for the Daimler subsidiary in Turkey, “This latest major order is further testimony to Daimler Buses' dynamic growth in Turkey and thereby contributes to the strengthening of our global presence.” Schick also reiterates Daimler Buses’ claim to leadership, “Every day, we are working diligently to expand our leadership position in the bus sector, and we are delighted by what we have achieved to date.”
At the ceremony for the signing of the contract by Wolf-Dieter Kurz, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Türk, and Hayri Baracli, Managing Director of IETT, the long-standing Daimler customer commented about the follow-up order, “With a tradition of more than 140 years, IETT is generating new momentum for the creation of a modern Istanbul. We are investing in an updated fleet consisting primarily of Mercedes-Benz city buses for public passenger transport in Istanbul. This way, we are making a significant contribution to comfortable transportation in Istanbul.” IETT operates Mercedes-Benz Conecto city buses for regular service operations. For the urban mobility concept Bus Rapid Transit, IETT uses the high-capacity articulated bus Mercedes-Benz CapaCity. By utilizing lanes separate from private transport, BRT is noticeably assisting the relief of city traffic.
The 221 Mercedes-Benz Conecto articulated buses are being produced at the Mercedes-Benz bus plant in Hosdere and will be delivered to the customer until September 2012. The 18-meter low-floor bus can carry up to 160 passengers. The low height of the entrances ensures that passengers can get on and off the bus quickly. The Mercedes-Benz Conecto meets the EU’s environmental standard Euro V with its BlueTec diesel technology, which reduces pollutant and particulate emissions.

The Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Türk was established in Istanbul in 1967. It began producing buses for the Turkish market in 1968. The Aksaray plant launched truck production in 1986. The facilities in Aksaray and Hosdere are key elements of Daimler’s global production network.

The latest success for Mercedes-Benz Trucks involves another major order for 202 units of Mercedes-Benz Actros 1844 LS trucks placed by the Turkish chocolate manufacturing company Tören Gida, which is converting most of fleet to the tried and tested truck model. Tören Gida, which has its headquarters in Gaziantep in Southeast Anatolia, is one of the most important industrial companies in the region. The truck fleet delivers the company’s products to 25 countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the delivery of two Mercedes-Benz Actros 1844 LS vehicles as part of the major order, Tören Gida Chairman Mahmut Tören explained his decision to invest in a fleet of Actros trucks as follows: “Because the trucks are extremely fuel-efficient and have low operating and maintenance costs as well as a high resale value, we’re switching our fleet over to tractor-trailers from Mercedes-Benz.”
Wolf-Dieter Kurz, President and CEO of Daimler’s Turkish subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Türk, reinforces the big order at the ceremony in Istanbul. “All of our activities continually focus on the demands and requirements of our customers. We’re very pleased that our vehicles are contributing to the success of Tören Gida,” he said. “Tören Gida’s extremely dynamic development and readiness for action has enabled it to become a very successful company in Turkey.”
