smart escooter: Electric smart on two wheels
With the purely electrically driven escooter, smart is presenting a further solution for intelligent urban mobility. The innovative two-wheel study translates consistently the characteristic advantages of the pioneering smart fortwo electric drive e-car into a two-wheeler: compact dimensions, agility, high safety standards and the driving fun typical of the smart brand, not least backed by an efficient and locally emission-free drivetrain. In addition to its innovative technical solutions, the new escooter convinces with its distinctive, state-of-the-art design and simple handling. One more advantage is the integration of smartphones: the further developed smart drive kit app has versatile functions such as those of a speedometer or range indicator. As a result, functionality, environmental sustainability and driving fun accompany the smart escooter. The smart two-wheeler will have its world premiere at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, giving visitors an outlook at future zero-emission products from the smart brand.
Dr. Annette Winkler, head of smart says “When our customers speak enthusiastically about their smart they describe the perfect city car that is manoeuvrable, flexible, safe, spacious and fast and offers lots of driving fun - on the road and when looking for a parking space. Lots of people are already looking forward to the zero-emission continuation of the “vision smart” with the smart electric drive, which will soon become a firm part of the cityscape. And now we are bringing all these features to two wheels with the escooter.”
The smart escooter, as practical as unconventional, is most at home in big cities, where it can be used in a variety of ways. In urban traffic, the electric scooter is an intelligent amendment or alternative to the car – with its superior manoeuvrability, exemplary comfort and pioneering safety features. The latter include an airbag, ABS anti-lock brake system and a Blind Spot Assist.
“With the escooter, we consistently continue our “vision smart”: even more driving fun in the city, even more adaptability to the respective living environment, even more flexibility - not least because it offers the possibility to be integrated in our car2go concept”, says Annette Winkler.
The single track escooter will enable smart to tap new growth potential. Two-wheelers will enable the brand to reach also considerable younger people who do not yet have a car driving licence. In addition, the two-wheel vehicles that have been configured for an “e-drive” from the outset also have functional and environmental advantages they convince with in inner city traffic. All in all, the smart escooter offers also the ideal prerequisites for integration in individual urban mobility concepts such as car2go.
Annette Winkler: “The escooter shows what an integrated, open approach we have to the subject of ‘urban mobility’. This pragmatic approach, combined with smart’s typical fun factor, is what makes smart so special. We perceive mobility as a combination of responsibility and emotion – and our smart escooter accomodates this request in every respect.”
smart escooter – anything but conventional
The smart escooter makes a first impression with its independent, unconventional design based on a sophisticated ergonomic concept. It exudes pure joie de vivre, introducing a fresh and surprising element into urban traffic. The design of the electric scooter is characterised by its attractive, sporty proportions: the front looks sorted and compact when viewed from the side, while the rear wheel gives the appearance of being positioned a long way behind the seat area, emphasising the scooter’s forward thrust and agility. The dynamic, elegant appearance is underlined by its composition of complete surfaces and accentuated lines - designers talk of “iconic” design.
The cool appearance of the escooter is emphasised by affectionately crafted details that enhance its high-value yet trendy effect – from delicate cockpit panelling to a flush-fitted rear light. At the same time, the concept offers practical solutions, extreme ease of handling and outstanding safety.
The electric scooter’s supporting chassis structure is consciously modelled on the tridion safety cell of the smart fortwo. Its steel and aluminium frame is clad with fully interchangeable plastic bodypanels. This is another clear parallel to the successful two-seater. Further special features of the escooter are the long, extensive and translucent elements on the edges of the foot protection (front panelling). These illuminated side markers improve visibility from the side, and also serve as striking indicators. The smart escooter guarantees distinguished impact in terms of “see and be seen” by means of state-of-the-art LED technology. Both the front headlamp, backlight and brake light are equipped with it.
Visual similarity to its four-wheeled big brother
The smart escooter's white paintwork with green accents underlines its relationship to the smart fortwo electric drive. Also in terms of suitability for everyday use, the electric scooter clearly bears the genes of the two-seater car. For example, the frame of the smart escooter does not only house technical components such as the battery and power electronics, but also offers additional storage space, for example for helmets.
Dynamic driving fun – of course, emission-free
In addition to environmental sustainability, the smart escooter has a focus on driving fun: it is driven by a disc-shaped wheel hub motor in the rear wheel, which offers a powerful 4 kW despite its compact size. The brushless direct current hub drive transmits its power directly to the rear wheel, and is clean and maintenance-free. A further advantage: as the motor does not take up any space in the chassis, more stowage space is available there.
As full torque is available right from the start, speedy moving is possible. At traffic lights, smart escooter riders can easily outpace most cars. They also benefit from the scooter’s modern chassis design: front and rear wheels are each mounted on an elegant single-sided swingarm. A 130/60 R13 tyre is fitted at the front, while its rear counterpart measures 140/65/R13.
The smart escooter has a top speed of 45 km/h. The traction current is supplied by a state-of-the-art, 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to the battery’s capacity of 80 Ah, ranges of up to 100 kilometres are possible. The escooter can be charged at any standard household power socket, within three to five hours. The charging socket is stored at the front of the scooter underneath a hinged smart emblem, while the charger itself is integrated in the scooter.
The smart philosophy: stress-free and safe driving
Characteristic of smart vehicles is their distinctive functionality in conjunction with model high safety level. These two elements together make for stress-free and safe travel. The new smart escooter follows consistently this ideal: in doing so, it does not only meet all statutory requirements, but also sets new standards in its segment.
In contrast to conventional scooters, the smart escooter is equipped with ultra-modern safety features of a kind rarely seen even on modern motorcycles. These include an anti-lock braking system (ABS) specially adapted for a two-wheeler, an airbag integrated in the panelling beneath the handlebars, and Blind Spot Assist, which draws the rider’s attention to vehicles following close behind him that are not visible in the “blind spot” of the rear-view mirrors – extremely useful when changing lanes, for example. Like in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a triangular light flashes in the rear-view mirror. So, the common cause of accidents involving scooters is addressed.
Combined front/rear brake and ABS
To brake the smart escooter safely, just one touch suffices to retard both the front and rear wheel simultaneously. When the hydraulic disc brake at the front is actuated, an anti-lock braking system kicks in to ensure maximum braking effect even during emergency braking. The rear wheel is braked in parallel to the front wheel, though not mechanically but electrically.
This task is performed by the wheel hub motor in the rear wheel, which normally propels the scooter forwards. When the brakes are applied, the operating principle is reversed: the motor becomes a generator whose resistance provides the required braking effect. The resulting braking energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the scooter’s lithium-ion battery. The anyway high energy efficiency of the escooter is further enhanced by additional solar cells at the front. These solar collectors are used to support the charging of the state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack whenever the sun is shining, also when the scooter is moving.
Always new, always intelligent – smart
When it comes to comfort and convenience, the escooter is also a smart through and through. Its attractive, creative yet pragmatic solutions are fully in line with the smart brand principle “easy to use”. The smart escooter’s intelligent and simple operating concept is particularly convincing.
One example is the charging socket, which is integrated externally in the panelling at the front, and therefore extremely easy to access. Like the smart fortwo, the escooter also disposes of an intelligent storage system. Underneath the seat there is a lockable stowage space with enough room for both the driver’s and the pillion rider’s helmets. The scooter’s lithium-ion batteries are placed space-efficient and well protected behind the panelling in the foot area. The resulting mass centring and low centre of gravity promote agility and stable roadholding.
The smart escooter also offers driving fun for two: that is enabled by a fold-out seat which looks elegant when in use, and which appears to “hover” over the rear wheel. The footrests for the pillion rider automatically move into position when the second seat is folded out. If, instead, the rider requires more storage space, the pillion seat can be replaced with a luggage rack.
Linked via smartphone
The smartphone plays a special role for the escooter, serving as the scooter’s control and communication centre. Before starting the electric scooter, the rider simply places the smartphone in a specially-designed mount in the centre of the handlebars. So, it is fully linked with the smart escooter. At the same time, immobiliser and anti-theft protection are deactivated, allowing the electric scooter to be started.
The new, further developed smart drive kit app allows the rider to use online services when making stops on the road. During the journey, the smartphone serves as the scooter’s speedometer. It also displays the range and battery charge level and acts as a navigation system. Should the rider ever forget where he parked his escooter, the “GPS Tracking” smartphone app can help him identify the position.
The handlebar heating can also be controlled remotely – a comfort feature especially ideal on cooler days.

Maybach Facelift: Perfection taken to exciting heights
- Effortlessly superior, striking look
- New interior concepts with new brilliant trim
- Extensive new illustrious equipment and appointments
- Higher output coupled with lower consumption
- Unique details in the high-end luxury class
Since 2002 Maybach has been defining new standards in the top league of high-end luxury saloons, whilst at the same time continuing the tradition of legendary Maybach vehicles which were part of the elite in the German and international automotive construction industry in the nineteen twenties and thirties of the last century. It is this challenging legacy that the luxury brand is carrying forward – in the form of an extensive facelift of the Maybach saloons. The prestigious, tradition-steeped Maybach brand is consolidating its top position in the high-end luxury segment with a more striking design and even more extensive equipment and appointments.
“To create only the best from the best, a vehicle that is the ultimate in wish fulfilment, with a distinctive character of the finest elegance and power” – this is how a Maybach flyer dating back to 1930 declared the company’s aim, and it still applies at Maybach in its entirety to this day. This clear avowal of the extraordinary obliged Maybach to revise its high-end luxury saloons extensively and at a top level when it came to the latest facelift.
Striking, self-confident design
Following their facelift, the Maybach saloons shine with their self-confident, effortlessly superior, distinctive charisma. It is above all the new dominant chrome radiator grille that emphasises their exceptional status – it is meticulously crafted in two different variants. In the Maybach 57 and 62 models it is graced with 20 fine longitudinal bars and in the 57 S and 62 S Maybach models twelve solid double louvres with a “shadow strut” put the spotlight on the vehicle’s tremendous power. Both arrow-shaped radiator grilles are also higher than before, have considerably larger dimensions, are positioned more upright and further forward in the direction of travel – clearly symbolising the self-confident status and effortlessly superior, striking appearance.
The designers have elevated the modified bonnet with a higher front upper edge and given it sharply defined contours. It has a shaped edge and appears distinctly arrow-shaped, more expressive and longer than previously. A restyled, horizontally structured bumper trim gives the Maybach saloons an even broader look from the front. Daytime driving lights featuring LED technology and bordered with a chrome insert have been integrated into the outer air intakes.
The new exterior mirrors with optimised aerodynamics for less driving noise harmonise very well with the striking front. Their large mirror surface also means improved vision. Dark red tail lights of exquisite material quality complete with chrome embellishment, plus chrome trim used on the handle in the boot lid lend the end section a powerful, distinguished look. This in turn is underlined by new high-sheen 21-spoke 19-inch wheels in titanium silver for the Maybach 57 and 62 models. The Maybach 57 S and 62 S models will in future be shod as standard with new 12-spoke 20-inch wheels painted in noble sterling silver. And all the models are available in the new, exclusively developed Bahamas Blue paint.
As a result of the facelift measures, the new Maybach saloons gain an extra 11 millimetres in length and 17 millimetres in width when the exterior mirrors are folded out.
Interior – superb craftsmanship
As one would expect, the Maybach MANUFAKTUR showcases masterly handcraftsmanship with no compromises in the interior, where materials of the highest quality abound. As is the case with everything from Maybach, the utmost attention has been paid to every last detail. Every seam, every joint is perfectly executed, viewed from every angle this is a feast for the eyes, touching every single feature is a tactile delight – noblesse oblige.
There are three new interior appointments with different leather, carpet and headlining colours (Saona Beige for the Maybach 57 and 62, Whitehaven Beach and Kuril Islands for the Maybach 57 S and 62 S). They create an elegant, light and stimulating lighting mood – especially in conjunction with the unique electrotransparent panoramic glass sunroof in the models with a long wheelbase. It spans the roof liner above the rear passengers like an atrium, allowing light to flood the rear compartment and gives a rare degree of control over the illumination of the surroundings. It features a liquid crystal membrane of conductive polymer plastic. When an alternating current is applied to it, the crystals in the plastic membrane are arranged in such a way that the glass becomes transparent and allows daylight into the rear of the Maybach 62 models over its entire area. As soon as the power is switched off, the liquid crystals lose their transparent arrangement again and the light is fragmented in all directions. The glass becomes nearly opaque and filters the daylight falling on it to produce a pleasant, diffused glow. This electrically operated transparency function is also used in most countries for the partition screen that can be ordered as an option.
An electrically driven sliding liner rounds off the luxurious lighting package. Its electroluminescent membrane can be switched on at the touch of a button when closed, emitting a pleasant, diffused light over its entire surface. A rotary switch in the rear console of the Maybach 62 models gives the rear passengers complete control over the illumination of the membrane and strength of the ambient lighting.
Some exquisite new additions have found their way into the large selection of trim available. There is now trim in selected dark brown bird’s-eye maple, which can also be combined with brilliant porcelain piano lacquer in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S models, underlining the refined ambience. As an alternative, a sporty touch comes in the form of carbon-fibre trim elements in new colours, among them silver and red.
Lovers of more compact vehicle dimensions will in future be able to enjoy the outstanding comfort afforded by the rear reclining seats – previously only available in the Maybach saloons with a long wheelbase. With immediate effect this first-class armchair can also be installed on the passenger side in the rear of the Maybach 57 and 57 S models as an option. At the same time Maybach has enhanced the craftsmanship of the seats for all models. The look of the seat upholstery layout has been refined and given additional piping. On request the piping running round the seats can also be supplied in a hand-braided version with four fine, individual leather stripes or adorned with valuable SWAROVSKI® ELEMENTS. In the upper part of the seat backrest, a redesigned badge in hand-polished 925 sterling silver with the embossed Maybach logo and “MAYBACH MANUFAKTUR” lettering is an impressive indication of the great love of detail, serving as a reminder of the prestigious ambience in which one is travelling.
The partition available as an option for the Maybach 62 and 62 S can now also be personalised with motifs of the customer’s choosing. In these cases the highly qualified specialists at the Maybach Manufaktur first of all skilfully cut the desired motif from a film before affixing it to the partition. They then irradiate the exposed areas with diamond particles, so that a matt surface is created in the contours of the chosen motif.
A scented haven of wellbeing
Maybach cuts an equally fine figure when it comes to the range of individualisation options available for the luxury saloons, which has been extensively extended. For the very first time there is an extremely high-quality flacon perfume atomiser available on request, having been developed exclusively by Maybach. Up until now it was reserved only for the special Maybach Zeppelin model, limited to just 100 units. This exquisite equipment detail – the only one of its kind anywhere in the world – represents a very special highlight indeed. At the touch of a button it produces a unique fragrant experience thanks to the use of sophisticated technology and high-quality perfume which discreetly, unobtrusively and gently stimulates the passengers’ senses. There is absolutely no comparison between this and other solutions containing concentrates or particulate matter.
At the heart of the system lies an internally illuminated Plexiglass sphere on the rear centre console, into which Maybach owners can insert a flacon containing a perfume they have personally selected. A compressor then directs a gentle flow of air into the Plexiglass sphere, fanning the flacon’s perfume molecules into the vehicle interior.
The perfume atomiser can be activated either from the driver’s seat or by means of a button in the rear centre console, with an additional thumbwheel in the rear for sensitive aroma control. The chosen fragrance gently wafts into the passenger compartment within ten to twelve seconds. On models with a partition screen, only the passengers in the rear are able to activate the atomiser.
The aroma experts took the particular biological characteristics of the human nose into consideration when designing the control mechanism. As it adjusts to smells in such a way that it no longer perceives them after a short while, the perfume atomiser switches off after about ten minutes. Once the system has switched off, the fragrance – which does not seep into the interior’s materials or the occupants’ clothes – quickly evaporates. Reactivating the atomiser later allows the fragrant experience to be enjoyed all over again.
Entertainment and electronics are state of the art
Entertainment galore comes courtesy of a new multiformat DVD player. It reads all important formats such as DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD-R/CD-RW, DVD video/video CD and CD-DA playback/MP3. As an option a large high-resolution cinema screen with a 19-inch diagonal can now be fitted to the centre of the partition in the Maybach 62 models, as an alternative to the 9.5‑inch monitors in the rear available until now. Sound in concert-hall quality is on tap in the form of a 600-watt sound system with 21 loudspeakers from renowned hi-fi specialist BOSE®.
As an option Maybach can now also install an overview camera in the vehicles with a partition and cinema screen. Rear passengers are then able to keep an eye on the traffic in front of them without being seen themselves – even with an opaque partition window. This creates an oasis of seclusion in which they can always enjoy total privacy.
An innovative WLAN router takes care of wireless internet access – even during the journey. As an alternative, mobile devices can also be connected via a cable to a LAN socket in order to reduce electromagnetic radiation in the interior. This sophisticated internet connection is unique in this vehicle segment and utilises the rapid transmission standards HSDPA, UMTS and GSM/EDGE. It is capable of serving three mobile devices such as laptops simultaneously, so now it is child’s play for Maybach owners to synchronise the data on their laptop with those on their computer at home or in the office, or to keep constant track of the current news via the internet, for instance. A mobile phone hands-free system with Bluetooth functionality and voice transmission via the vehicle’s existing loudspeakers and microphones is also available as a further option.
More powerful yet fewer emissions
Even though the engineers at Maybach have increased the output of the Maybach 57 S and 62 S by 13 kW (18 hp) to 463 kW (630 hp), they were able to reduce the consumption figures (from 6.4 to 15.8 l/100 km) and the CO2 output (from 390 to 368 g/km CO2) at the same time. The output of the 57 and 62 models remained unchanged, but consumption (15.0 as opposed to 15.9 l/100 km) and CO2 output (350 as opposed to 383 g/km) was also cut here. All the Maybach twelve-cylinder engines meet the EU5 standard/LEV2.
Warranty covering eight years or 200,000 kilometres
To coincide with the facelift, Maybach has introduced a new warranty policy. With the country-specific Maybach service and warranty packages Excellent and Basic, service and warranty are covered up to a vehicle age of eight years or a mileage of 200,000 kilometres/125,000 miles. After this point the life-long mobility warranty applies.
The numerous different variants of the Maybach service and warranty package can be purchased at various points in time and extended again according to personal requirements, which means that it offers even more extensive cover in case of damage, plus calculable maintenance costs. A unique feature of the package is the fact that it includes, for example, replacements in case of wear such as paint, leather, wood, carpet and upholstery, as well as noise repairs. The Maybach experts use only genuine Maybach parts of the very highest quality, meaning that the Maybach is always in pristine condition. This facilitates the luxury saloons’ long-term value retention and is an advantage not to be underestimated when it comes to resale.
Maybach means: unique and masterful down to the last detail
The name Maybach has always been synonymous with the continuous striving for aesthetic appeal, perfection, elegance and the ultimate in comfort. This is why the luxury saloons from the Maybach Manufaktur are painstakingly crafted by hand with the utmost skill and care. At least 30 days pass between the time a Maybach leaves its birthplace in Sindelfingen and the point at which it is handed over to the customer. The owner is the receiver of an automotive dream with enviable levels of spaciousness, fitted with the very finest woods, the softest leather and deep-pile carpets. It is for this reason that many customers prefer to travel in the superior comfort the rear of a Maybach offers as opposed to a private jet – sometimes for distances of over 1000 kilometres.
It is thanks to the high standards which Maybach sets for both the exterior and the interior design of its high-end luxury saloons that Maybach vehicles boast a series of details which are unique even in this prestigious segment. The rear reclining seats, with their opulent first-class proportions, remain unrivalled. Up until now they were reserved for the Maybach models with a long wheelbase, but they can now also be fitted in the more compact variants. The large electrotransparent panoramic glass sunroof is also only available from Maybach.
In order to regulate the climate in the hugely spacious interior, the Maybach saloons are equipped with an unparalleled climate control system. The high-end luxury saloons are equipped with two leading-edge automatic climate control systems – one for the front section of the car and a separate second unit for the rear compartment. Sensors allow the air conditioning systems to respond to the temperature and air humidity, the intensity of the sun and the level of pollution in the outside air.
Further trademark characteristics of Maybach saloons are their very highly valued fine details such as the instrument display in the rear, the easy-close function for the doors in the passenger compartment with a closing procedure that is virtually silent, the extensive, state-of-the-art Rear Seat Entertainment System, the electronic intercom system and the electrohydraulic braking system with the additional priming and dry braking functions.
Like travelling in a sedan chair
Journeying in a Maybach means relaxing in peace and calm. If at all, noise from the road or airflow reaches the ears of the passengers as though from afar. The high-end luxury saloons from Sindelfingen possess nigh-on proverbial quiet-running characteristics. The smooth ride is all thanks to the carefully optimised, low natural body frequencies, a suspension with a hydraulic subframe and shock absorbers meticulously developed with enormous attention to detail. Also co-responsible for the exemplary smooth ride are the four-bearing propshaft, the differential with gears carefully ground-in by hand and the large wheels with tyres specially developed for the Maybach. Michelin had made no less than 27 tyre samples available just for the Maybach saloons, and it was only after lengthy tuning work that the best result was finally achieved.
But it is not only these major measures that turn the Maybach saloons into a blissfully peaceful haven reminiscent of a sedan chair. An equally important contribution is made by textile trim in the wheel arches, which dampen the clatter of stone chippings that are thrown up, acoustically dampened air ducts, in whose acoustically effective labyrinth sound waves become lost and an unusually long exhaust system – measuring six metres in length – which is characterised by multiple flexible decoupling. A total of 224 parts in every Maybach saloon boast superb acoustic effectiveness – such as the windows with acoustic film, which connects two panes, thus preventing them from vibrating, or 93 kilograms of function-optimised acoustic material.
And Maybach does not leave the task of achieving perfection at the highest level merely to intensive engineering work – this happens first and foremost in the Maybach Manufaktur itself. Only the very best specialists work here. Just as every single Maybach is individually equipped, they also treat each Maybach as an individual. And they add their signature to the certificate which belongs to every saloon, confirming the high quality of their work. This means that the Maybach is far from being an anonymous product – each employee is identifiable and takes personal responsibility. This also applies to the employees at the Manufaktur who are responsible for the final inspection. At the end of the process they test-drive the finished luxury car and subject it to meticulous scrutiny with their sensitive senses – an extensive procedure which Maybach prescribes for every single vehicle, and one which goes far beyond what is customary.
Individualisation
Tailor-made individualisation is part of the recipe for success of the luxury Maybach brand. It offers its customers unique ways of customising the specification of its top-class saloons. The Manufaktur in Sindelfingen turns a whole host of special requests in reality: of crucial importance in the work performed are the materials and cutting-edge technologies used to offer an extraordinary visual and tactile experience. This is why the Maybach specialists repeatedly come up with superb new materials and paint finishes – many of them specially developed for Maybach and not available from any other vehicle manufacturer. One of the brand-new features is the option of having individual motifs included on the partition window.
With its flair for the extraordinary, its acute understanding of the perceptual capabilities of the senses and through continuous dialogue with its customers, the Maybach Manufaktur continuously expands its range of optional and customised extras in order to keep fulfilling the wishes and requirements of the automotive market’s most prestigious clientele. And it is for this reason that the luxury Maybach saloons will again be available with special protection after the facelift.

At the Motor Show 2010 in Paris, Maybach will be presenting its high-end luxury saloons with added sparkle and with significantly extended high-class equipment and individualisation options. A large new chrome radiator grille confidently emphasises the legendary saloons’ exceptional status. Other new highlights include the bonnet with a shaped edge, the trim on the front bumper with daytime driving lights featuring LED technology, high-quality, dark red tail lights and a new, exclusively developed paint and stylish wheels. In future those purchasing a Maybach 57 and 57 S will also be able to opt for the rear reclining seat from the Maybach 62 models. New items are available on request, among them seat piping which is hand-braided or refined with SWAROVSKI® ELEMENTS, an exquisite flacon perfume atomiser and a WLAN router for wireless internet access. As an option, a 19-inch cinema screen and an overview camera for the rear passengers can be installed in the rear of the Maybach 62 and 62 S models. The output of the twelve-cylinder engine in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S has been increased to 463 kW (630 hp) but the pollutant emissions of all models have still been cut.
The facelifted versions of the Maybach saloons are even more self-confident and effortlessly superior, their charisma even more striking. The exceptional status they enjoy finds its main emphasis in the new dominant chrome radiator grille, which is meticulously produced in two different variants. In the Maybach 57 and 62 models it has 20 fine longitudinal bars, and in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S twelve solid double louvres and a “shadow strut” flag up the vehicle’s tremendous power. Interior – superb craftsmanship
The rear reclining seat which has only been available in the Maybach saloons with a long wheelbase up until now can, with immediate effect, also be installed on the front-passenger side in the rear of the Maybach 57 and 57 S models. At the same time Maybach has enhanced the craftsmanship of the seats for all models. The look of the seat upholstery layout has been refined and given additional piping. On request the piping can also be hand-braided or adorned with valuable SWAROVSKI® ELEMENTS. In the upper part of the seat backrest a redesigned badge in 925 sterling silver with “MAYBACH MANUFAKTUR” lettering is an impressive indication of the great love of detail and serves as a reminder of the prestigious environment in which one is
travelling.
Maybach cuts an equally fine figure when it comes to the range of individualisation options available for the luxury saloons, which has been significantly extended. For the very first time there is an extremely high-quality flacon perfume atomiser available on request, having been developed exclusively by Maybach. Up until now it was reserved only for the special Maybach Zeppelin model, limited to just 100 units. As an option a large, high-resolution cinema screen with a 19-inch diagonal can now be fitted to the centre of the partition in the Maybach 62 models, as an alternative to the 9.5-inch monitors in the rear available until now. If required Maybach will also fit the vehicles which have a partition – which, incidentally, can now also be personalised with motifs of the customer’s choosing – with an overview camera, via which the rear passengers are able to keep an eye on the traffic in front of them without being seen themselves – even with an opaque partition window.
Thanks to an innovative WLAN router it is even possible to enjoy wireless internet access during the journey. This state-of-the-art connection uses the fast transmission standards HSDPA, UMTS and GSM/EDGE. A new mobile phone hands-free system with Bluetooth functionality is also available in the rear. And a newly developed DVD player in the rear now also reads extended DVD formats.
As one would expect, the Maybach Manufaktur showcases masterly handcraftsmanship with no compromises in the interior, where materials of the highest quality abound. There are three new interior appointments with different leather, carpet and headlining colours. New trim in selected dark brown bird’s-eye maple, which can be combined with brilliant porcelain piano lacquer in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S, underline the regal ambience. As an alternative, customers can now choose from carbon-fibre trim elements with a sporty touch in various different colours, such as silver and red.
More powerful yet fewer emissions
Even though the Maybach developers have increased the output of the Maybach 57 S and 62 S by 13 kW (18 hp) to 463 kW (630 hp), they were able to reduce the consumption figures (from 16.4 to 15.8 l/100 km) and the CO2 output (from 390 to 368 g/km CO2). The output of the 57 and 62 models remained unchanged, whilst consumption (15.0 as opposed to 15.9 l/100 km) and CO2 output (350 as opposed to 383 g/km) was also cut here. Innovative holder featuring Mercedes-Benz quality: Apple iPad always ready for use
Mobile entertainment is what the Apple iPad is all about. Thanks to an innovative docking station, Mercedes-Benz Accessories is now demonstrating how the tablet computer could be integrated into the rear of many Mercedes-Benz models.
The prototype of the docking station is being presented at the Paris Motor Show in an S-Class, and the plan is to launch the integration solution for the iPad onto the market for a variety of Mercedes models after development for series production. Mounted on the back of the front seats at head restraint height, the holder significantly extends the usability of the iPad: the battery of the tablet PC begins to charge as soon as the device is placed in the holder. Once at the destination, it can be simply removed without having to be switched off, and during the journey all of the entertainment products stored on the iPad can continue to be used. The docking station can be turned and tilted to achieve the best viewing angle, and if the vehicle is fitted with the Mercedes-Benz InCar Hotspot then even an iPad without UMTS functionality can enjoy the benefit of a full connection to the Internet.
The frame of the docking station, along with the attachment to the seat structure, have also been designed and verified in line with the high safety standards applied at Mercedes-Benz. A significant safety benefit is provided by the fact that the iPad is anchored in the docking station - unlike a device held in the hand or placed on a seat - and in the event of an accident cannot fly uncontrolled through the vehicle, potentially causing injury.
Installation of the docking station takes approximately 1.5 hours, and the vehicle does not require any preinstallation. All in all, the docking station is the perfect match for Mercedes-Benz in terms of its design, look and functionality, and at the same time also highlights the high quality feel of the vehicle interior.

World premiere: The new Mercedes-Benz Viano – a new definition of 'top class'
- Eco-friendly engines with BlueEFFICIENCY technology
- The ultimate in ride comfort and handling safety
- Perfection in its interior appointments, whisper-quiet ride
- A fresh face for the Viano and a new tail end
- Now also sold through Mercedes-Benz passenger car dealerships and partners
The Paris Motor Show provides the ideal platform for the official world premiere of the new Mercedes-Benz Viano, the vehicle which redefines the term 'top class' in large-capacity vehicles. New engines and transmissions reduce emissions and consumption, while at the same time improving performance. The new chassis provides the ultimate synthesis of ride comfort and handling safety; and is complemented by a cockpit and passenger compartment that are now more attractive than ever. In recognition of the discerning target group for whom it is designed, the new Viano is now also available, with immediate effect, through Mercedes-Benz passenger car dealerships and trading partners.
Eco-friendly engines with BlueEFFICIENCY technology
Key among the Viano's new features is a completely redeveloped, environmentally friendly drive system. All engines meet the EU 5 emissions level. Fuel economy figures have improved once again, reducing CO2 emissions at the same time by up to 15 percent. In conjunction with the new ECO Gear six-speed manual transmission, an important role is played here by the BlueEFFICIENCY technology with ECO start/stop function, which comes as standard: an innovative package of measures that is unrivalled among large-capacity vehicles.
Delivering 100 kW (136 hp) in the Viano CDI 2.0 and 120 kW (163 hp) in the Viano CDI 2.2, the new four-cylinder engines are extremely smooth-running, thanks to their balancer shafts. All diesel engines are fitted with particulate filters. The broad gear ratio spread of the new ECO Gear six-speed manual transmission in all four-cylinder models provides the basis for the best possible performance, yet manages to combine this with low fuel consumption and emissions.
The only diesel engine that can improve on this is the V6 in the Viano CDI 3.0, which delivers exceptionally smooth running characteristics along with impressive performance and pulling power. With an output of 165 kW (224 hp), it is even more powerful, economical and eco-friendly than before. Any requirement for even higher performance or further improvements in comfort is met by the Viano 3.5 with its V6 petrol engine, delivering 190 kW (258 hp).
The ultimate in ride comfort and handling safety
The driving dynamics and handling of the Mercedes-Benz Viano have always been exemplary. The new Viano offers a particularly convincing proposition thanks to its completely redesigned and tuned comfort suspension. The very basics of their design is all that the front and rear axles have in common with the previous models. The Viano has thus raised the bar in terms of ride comfort and handling safety to a whole new level. The high standard of safety of the Viano and the inclusion of assistance systems in its standard specification set a completely new benchmark.
Perfection in its interior appointments, whisper-quiet ride
The list of new features in the vehicle's interior covers a broad scope from ambient lighting to an extra power socket. But the focus of such new features is always on improving comfort and the sense of quality. The standard specification from Viano Trend upwards now includes a four-spoke multifunction steering wheel with new control buttons and matt chrome-finish trim on the spokes. Both the steering wheel and the shift lever knob are upholstered in soft-touch nappa leather.
New interior trim designs enhance the appeal of the Viano Trend and Ambiente and, optionally, of the Viano Fun. The use of high-grade leather, chrome trim and new surface finishes adds to the sense of wellbeing. At the heart of the new lighting concept is an ambient lighting system incorporating light sources in the footwell as well as fibre-optic units in the recesses behind the grab handles in the rear compartment. Particular attention has been paid to reducing noise levels. Measures such as extra absorbers, reinforcements in the body structure, improved insulation and a new type of seal all add up to a whisper-quiet ride.
A fresh face for the Viano and a new tail end
From its radiator grille to the rear lights, the new Viano reveals a whole host of new touches. As a start, it has a more distinctive "face" than ever. New reflector headlamps frame the radiator grille, while the standard daytime running lights and fog lamps are integrated into the headlamp housing. The Viano is also now available, as an option, with a combination of bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, cornering light function and Add-Light System, as well as a headlamp wash/wipe system.
The Viano's bumpers have also been redesigned. The smooth surface is painted the same colour as the vehicle. New tail lamps are located to each side just above the rear bumper. These single-piece lamps with integrated glass-effect black surrounds frame the tail view of the Viano.
Display vehicle: comfortable, eco-friendly, powerful
The Mercedes-Benz Viano CDI 2.2 in Ambiente trim on display at the show demonstrates just what can be achieved with the Viano. Its 120 kW (163 hp) engine guarantees superior performance, while BlueEFFICIENCY technology allows that high performance to be combined with economical fuel consumption of just 7.2 l/100 km according to NEDC as well as low emissions. The level of comfort is equally exemplary: the Lugano leather upholstery with its elegant piping, burr walnut-effect decorative trim, rear-axle air suspension with electronic level control system, light-alloy wheels and bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light function and LED daytime running lights are all part of the standard specification.
The show vehicle features in addition automatic climate control with separate controls in the rear, electrically operated sliding doors and pre-wiring for the Rear Seat Entertainment System.

The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL: The epitome of luxury coupés
With a design perfected through an immaculate sense of style, highly exclusive appointments and cutting-edge technology, the extensively updated Mercedes-Benz CL-Class underscores its claim to supremacy as the summit of automotive refinement. The entirely re-designed 320 kW (435 hp) V8 biturbo engine of the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, with a combined consumption of 9.5 litres of premium-grade petrol per 100 km, opens a new dimension of efficiency in the luxury coupé category. Its figures show savings of 223 percent over its predecessor model, with CO2 emissions having dropped from 288 to 224 g/km. In addition, state-of-the-art multimedia technology also helps to ensure that this model, which is produced with a high proportion of hand-finished work, retains its position as the epitome of quality in its class.
With the new generation of the CL, the Stuttgart-based automaker focuses on fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in the exclusive high-end segment, too. According to Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG: "The CL is the ideal ambassador for our brand. To a special degree it integrates the things that go to make a Mercedes-Benz: fascination, perfection and responsibility. And with the new generation we raise the ante particularly in the area of efficiency. But in the realms of design, safety, comfort and performance, too, the CL shows: ahead is where Mercedes is."
In addition, a combination of cutting-edge camera and radar-based assistance systems unique in the luxury coupé segment, including the innovation of the Active Lane Keeping Assist and the Active Blind Spot Assist, makes of the CL a "thinking" partner of the driver. The modified Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilisation system and the Direct-Steer system also contribute to enhancing safety and driving enjoyment. Design: a muscular, self-assured presence
The exterior appearance of the new CL generation is characterised by the terse profile of the bonnet, the dynamic V-shape radiator grille and the curving headlamps – design details that discreetly but effectively emphasise the car's elegant yet powerful lines.
The front bumper, too, presents a new design with three air intake openings and a chrome trim strip. An LED strip with chrome surround for the daytime driving lights is elegantly integrated in the side openings for the brake cooling air. With their standard-fit Intelligent Light System (ILS) and Adaptive Highbeam Assist, the headlamps offer state-of-the-art illumination technology. The latest LED technology in the turn indicators and position marker lamps rounds off the car's advanced image. The rear of the vehicle is characterised by the newly-designed tail lights.
New V8 biturbo engine with innovative technology
The new-generation CL also assumes a pioneering role in the drive system sector. Under the bonnet of the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and CL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY a new V8 biturbo engine with BlueDIRECT technology delivers its impressive power. With a displacement of 4663 cc, the eight-cylinder engine produces 320 kW (435 hp) so that despite 0.8 litres less displacement, it is still around twelve percent more powerful than its predecessor, which had an output of 285 kW (388 hp). At the same time, torque was raised from 530 Nm to 700 Nm – an increase of 32 percent.
Combined consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), on the other hand, drops by 22 percent to 9.5 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres for the rear-wheel drive version. CO2 emissions consequently sink from 288 g/km to 224 g/km. The CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY requires a mere 4.9 seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h (previous model: 5.4 s). Summing up: the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY is significantly more agile, torquey and thriftier than its predecessor.
The BlueDIRECT technology package of the V8 biturbo includes a series of new developments, unique in their combination. Worthy of mention among these is the third-generation spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition with up to four ignition sparks within a millisecond. Together both enable an innovative combustion process called "homogenous split (HSP)". Other factors contributing to the exemplary low fuel consumption continue to be the consistent use of friction-optimised pistons, piston rings and cylinder barrels, the on-demand control of oil pump and the new three-phase thermal management in the coolant circuit. The luxury coupé's technology package includes the ECO start/stop function and alternator control in accordance with the handling situation and on-board voltage, including kinetic energy recuperation in overrun mode.
This significant reduction is achieved thanks not only to the newly-developed BlueDIRECT technology, but also to the specially-designed BlueEFFICIENCY package of the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. The package includes, among other things, energy-efficient control of the alternator, fuel pump, air-conditioning compressor and power-assisted steering system, as well as the ECO start/stop function and the new 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission. It also features the use of low rolling resistance tyres and the energy-optimised Active Body Control system.
The CL 600, with its 380 kW (517 hp) 12-cylinder biturbo engine remains the top-of-the-line model: it accelerates the luxury coupé from a standstill to 100 km/h in impressive 4.6 seconds and now also complies with the Euro 5 emissions control standard.
A unique combination of driver-assistance systems
The new-generation CL consolidates its position as an automotive masterwork and a technology platform of the Stuttgart-based company with the most advanced assistance and protection systems. These highly perceptive assistants convert the Mercedes model into a "thinking" partner that can see, feel and react instantly if it detects a hazard, acting autonomously to prevent accidents or to mitigate their effects. The trailblazing driver assistance systems in the CL are based on state-of-the-art radar, camera and sensor technology.
Thus, in the new-generation CL the Active Lane Keeping Assist celebrates its premiere (at the same time as in the S-Class). If the vehicle threatens to cross a broken lane marking line, the system actuates an electric motor in the steering wheel, causing it to vibrate briefly – giving the driver a discreet but effective warning hint to countersteer immediately. The active system springs into action if the Mercedes coupé unintentionally crosses a continuous lane marking line to the right or to the left. In this case, it intervenes by gently braking the wheels of the opposite side of the car, helping the driver to stay in the lane. In order to do this Active Lane Keeping Assist avails itself of the Electronic Stability Program ESP®.
Active Lane-Keeping Assist evaluates information provided by a camera mounted on the inside of the windscreen. It identifies the contrast between the road surface and the lane marking lines. In addition to this, using radar the system scans the side of the roadway for crash barriers and other roadway edge markings. This Mercedes assistance system also evaluates the driver's actions and can thus reliably determine whether the car is departing from the lane intentionally or not. For this reason, there is no warning if the driver accelerates hard just before overtaking or when accessing a motorway, or if he brakes hard or steers into a curve.
Targeted brake actuation: Active Blind Spot Assist
A further innovation Mercedes-Benz offers for the CL is Active Blind Spot Assist, a system that makes use of a multi-stage warning concept. If it detects that a change of lane would be too dangerous, it warns the driver by displaying a red triangle in the glass of the exterior mirror. Close-range radar sensors monitor the area immediately to the side and to the rear of the car. If the driver disregards this warning and, for example, actuates the turn indicator, an audible warning also sounds. If the driver continues to ignore the warnings and comes dangerously close to a vehicle in the neighbouring lane, a novel feature of the system acts: a corrective braking intervention via ESP® on the wheels of the opposite side of the vehicle. This causes a yaw movement about the car's vertical axis due to the unequal distribution of the braking forces.
If despite this course correction an accident cannot be avoided, the Active Blind Spot Assist system can reduce the consequences of a collision through the brake actuation.
Assistants to see and be seen better
Adaptive Highbeam Assist is another standard-fit system featured by the CL. This camera-based system can recognise oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead with their lights on, and then controls the headlamps to ensure the best possible beam range without dazzling other road users. In addition, Mercedes-Benz offers the Night View Assist Plus system for the CL, featuring a special infrared camera for pedestrian detection: as soon as the system detects pedestrians on the road ahead, these are highlighted additionally in the display, in order to catch the driver's attention better.
The images supplied by the windscreen camera are also used by the new, optional Speed Limit Assist, which recognises speed limit signs in passing and shows the relevant speed limit in the central display and on the navigation system's map display (standard for CL 600). For the new-generation CL, Mercedes-Benz has also improved the long and medium-range radar used by Brake Assist Plus (BAS PLUS) and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control.
An "electronic crumple zone": the PRE-SAFE® Brake
Mercedes-Benz also offers another radar based system for the luxury coupé as a component of the Driving Assistance package Plus in the form of the PRE-SAFE® Brake. If the driver is distracted and fails to recognise the imminent danger of a rear-end collision or the warning signal of an assistance system, this system can intervene and brake the vehicle independently. If the driver fails to react even after automatic, partial braking action, this most recent development stage of the PRE-SAFE® Brake activates the maximum braking pressure around 0.6 seconds before what it now recognises as an unavoidable collision -- an emergency braking action that can significantly mitigate the severity of the impact. The PRE-SAFE® Brake thus acts as a kind of "electronic crumple zone".
Warns driver of drowsiness: ATTENTION ASSIST
Drowsiness is one of the most common causes of accidents. This is why Mercedes experts have developed the ATTENTION ASSIST system which forms part of the standard equipment of the new generation of the CL. As the vehicle is being driven, the system continuously evaluates more than 70 different parameters in order to identify driver drowsiness and provide a warning before the dangerous micro-sleep phase begins. Observing the driver's steering behaviour has proved to be a particularly strong indicator: several years of practical research by Mercedes-Benz have shown that drowsy drivers make minor steering errors which they often correct very rapidly in a characteristic way. This steering behaviour is recognised by a special steering angle sensor. Observing the driver's eyes cannot always provide conclusive evidence of sleep since many drivers can experience micro-sleep with their eyes open.
Active Body Control reduces the effect of a crosswind
The CL also meets the highest standards in terms of driving dynamics and agility. This is in part thanks to Direct-Steer, with a steering ratio that varies with the steering angle, and modified Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilisation (standard for CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and CL 600). This latest stage in active body development modifies the wheel load distribution via the ABC spring struts within milliseconds, depending on crosswind direction and intensity, to the extent that it can largely compensate the effects of the crosswind.
The Active Body Control suspension system is unique worldwide as it not only regulates roll, but pitching and squatting movements as well, ensuring a perfect harmony of comfort and handling stability. Since the introduction of this innovative system, engineers at Sindelfingen have continuously improved on it, so that eleven years later it still marks the summit of automotive engineering. In addition to crosswind stabilisation, in its latest version the active suspension features a new energy-optimised hydraulic pump that takes part of the burden off the engine, contributing towards reducing fuel consumption.
Additional safety and agility at the physical limits is provided in the new-generation CL by the standard-fit Torque Vectoring Brake – targeted, one-sided braking intervention at the inside rear wheel when cornering. This enables the luxury coupé to turn into the bend under precise control with even greater agility.
Onboard infotainment: the most advanced multimedia technology
In line with its serene character and claim to be a technological masterwork, the CL also sets standards where onboard infotainment is concerned. Thus, the Stuttgart automotive manufacturer equips its flagship model with the new SPLITVIEW technology for the COMAND control and display system centrally located in the centre console (standard for the CL 600 in conjunction with Front Seat Entertainment package). This innovative display concept allows the driver and front passenger to view different contents simultaneously on one and the same screen. While the driver, for example, uses the map-based navigation system, the front passenger can be watching a film on DVD.
The standard COMAND control and display system with Bluetooth®, USB and SD card interfaces offers customers the possibility of exporting their stored data to other vehicles and multimedia devices. It is also possible to transfer and update navigation data. In the glove compartment Mercedes-Benz integrates as optional equipment the Media Interface – an interface for mobile audio and video devices – such as the iPod® and every other possible customer device.
The optional Navigation package with COMAND APS (standard for the CL 600) features a Europe-wide navigation system whose data are stored on a 40-gigabyte hard disc, enabling extremely rapid route calculation. Another factor contributing to a high level of navigation comfort is the detailed three-dimension map display including updates free of charge for three years. For musical entertainment COMAND APS provides a radio, a CD/DVD player with MP3 function, an equalizer with speed-dependent volume control and the MUSIC REGISTER with a 7.2 gigabyte hard disc which stores around 2500 digital music files in MP3, AAC or WMA format (which can be conveniently transferred to the REGISTER from PC memory cards). The system recognises music files played on CD, DVD or from the MUSIC REGISTER using its stored Gracenote® database, and shows the title, album and performer in the colour display. Another new function, Music Search, enables CL drivers and passengers to search SD memory cards, USB sticks, CDs and DVDs for specific music titles and performers.
The Navigation package also includes the latest-generation LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system that controls the navigation, telephone and audio devices via whole-word input. Benefit: the driver no longer needs to spell out his commands but simply speaks the corresponding words as whole words when entering the destination or choosing a radio station or a music title from the MUSIC REGISTER, or when calling up a name from the phone book.
The further enhanced surround sound system with Discrete Logic7® technology developed by Mercedes-Benz together with audio specialists Harman Kardon® delivers an outstanding performance with three-dimensional sound as a natural 360-degree musical experience for all passengers of the CL. Mercedes-Benz offers the surround sound system together with SPLITVIEW and a six-disc DVD changer as part of the Entertainment package (standard for CL 600).
Interior: carefully selected materials and first-class finish
In the interior, too, Mercedes-Benz developers and designers perfected the CL paying careful attention to detail. A total of four different kinds of fine wood open up the possibilities for perfectly matched material and colour concepts according to your personal taste: apart from light and dark high-gloss burr walnut, there is black ash and brown high-gloss poplar (CL 600). Another particularity: in line with the central importance awarded to the concept of sustainability within the Mercedes-Benz corporate philosophy, the CL employs only European wood from renewable forestry sources. Most of the wood parts are hand-made and matched individually for colour and grain by experienced craftsmen.
The seat covers of the new CL are of the most exquisite quality. For this luxury model there are two different kinds of leather available which thanks to their low pre-tensioning and consequent wrinkle effect appear supple and comfortable from the very first glance. There is a choice of five tasteful colour combinations for the vehicle interior: black/black, savannah beige/cashmere beige, sahara beige/black, and the novel combinations alpaca grey/basalt grey and aubergine/black.
The multifunction steering wheel of the CL has also been modified by the Mercedes-Benz designers: in future the rim and airbag module are lined with soft nappa leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction steering wheel covered in leather sewn with sophisticated double stitching.
Apart from this, Mercedes-Benz makes more use of light as a styling element in the vehicle interior. In future customers who specify the optional ambient lighting (standard for CL 600) have a choice between three lighting moods: solar (amber), neutral (white) and polar (ice-blue).
The high-performance coupés CL 63 AMG with 400 kW (544 hp) V8 biturbo engine (5.5 litres displacement) and CL 65 AMG with 463 kW (630 hp) twelve-cylinder (6 litres displacement) are products of Mercedes-AMG. As option, for the CL 63 AMG the AMG Performance package can be ordered, in conjunction with which the output is increased to 420 kW (571 hp).
